Ok, I have learned a lot here and I am going to take at 4x4 quigley tomorrow. I know some of you have had some advise against these but I really want a vehicle I can take on the Long Island beaches in the summer where I do a lot of fishing. I'm not a mechanic but have some basic knowledge. Is there any tips on what to look for? Wha is your basic impression on the vehicle based on the ad?

although I am the one that is against 4x4 conversions, I will give this advice. check for rust. crawl underneath and check. I wonder why it needed a transfer case before 170k. highdesertranger

Not a bad price for a 98 Quigley. Ask to see the receipts for the tranny/trans case work. If they are rebuilds or new as stated in the add, they spent around $2K or probably more. Selling it after a year for what they paid for it and not adding the repair costs onto the asking price bothers me. I'd get their ok to have the engine, etc checked by a mechanic before I'd buy. Does your state require a yearly vehicle inspection?
If the engine is OK then your looking at replacing brakes and tires. Beyond that, if the underside looks clean and nothing looks bent or has repair welds then It's not a bad price for that truck.

East coast rust aside, that is a good price for a Quigley. It is a gasser, so you don't have to worry about the 6.0 Diesel issues. Probably a 5.4. I have a friend who got 300K on one of those (2WD) and just replaced it with an Older one with 150k on it.

If I was closer, I'd probably buy that.

Funny, My wife was born in that town...

Yea I am a bit skeptical to that story but I did ask him if nys inspection was current and it is. I

Mechanic visit to it I'd NEVER buy something where the guy does a few grand worth of work then sells it after 100 miles of driving it...Unless the mech says "It's OK"...I'd be VERY spooked about that....

Just curious, I see it is a conversion style ford van but when I look that model up in 98 I see they all have raised roofs and this one does not. Was the raised roof an option on the conversion e250?

Quigley probably did the conversion. manufacturers(Ford) do not do conversions after market companies do. highdesertranger

Took a look at it in the pouring rain this morning and decided not to get it. A bit of body rust but not terrible, but got kinda spooked when I found out the brand new tranny is leaking and he has not brought back to the guys who just installed it. It also went into 3rd gear hard and he said it just needed adjusted. So I don't know, I had to temper my enthusiasm and say no. The seller seems like a good guy but the tranny thing is a bit disconcerting.

Kudos to being able to walk away. I know it's very easy to talk yourself into something when you have your heart set on something. Might be exactly what these owners did and once the desire wears off, you are more clear headed in realizing what you just bought. Sounds like they are trying to cut their losses and get out from under it.
