Micro Trailers, Anyone have one?

I recently attended a huge RV show at the Florida State Fairground in Tampa. 98% of the RV were huge, very expensive, not something I would buy... but fun to see nonetheless! There were a few companies with
micro / teardrop trailers. I like the concept!

Does anyone full-time in a "teardrop."

We've had all kinza tiny campers.

Had a teardrop that we pulled behind the hot-rod. A classic 5' x 10' Lonely Teardrop. It was a great rig, but teardrops have a few drawbacks which is why we sold it. (it's basically a hard sided tent.) Sleeping on a nice Serta mattress was great, but you couldn't stand up to put your pants on, and of course, there's no bathroom so you were stuck with whatever the campgrounds had (which my wife hated!!)
We did see some folks who had a porta-potty in a tiny stand-up tent, which would have worked fine, but we moved on to a...

Kwik-Kamp. This is the coolest thing ever. It's a pop-top camper that's small enough to pull behind my chopper, but has tons of storage room, a queen size bed, and you can stand up in it. We love it!!!

and before that, we also had a Trav-Lite motorcycle camper too. Nothing compared to the Kwik-Kamp.

Cool looking although it's really, before modification, just a pull behind, hard shelled tent that costs almost $4000.00.

on www.fiberglass-rv-4sale.com that same money will get a travel trailer equipped with furnace, bed, fans and so on.

Still, one is new and the others are used. Caveat emptor.

Patrick46 and MacJ, thanks for the comments. You both are correct! I'd like to see more teardrops with pop-tops, giving the user the ability to stand-up. I am currently sleeping in the bed of my Tacoma / ARE cap combo on a bedrug, and it has been fine, even in the cold! I don't plan to buy a teardrop, mainly because I don't like pulling trailers. I want the ability to go more off the beaten path and I think a trailer would make that more difficult for me. I just wanted to see if other people had experience in teardrops and maybe see some new models. Cool concept but probably not for me.

Just for the fun of it, I checked out a tear drop trailer at an RV store. It felt like sleeping in a coffin for me. Rather cute, but not for me either.

We loved ours. It's kinda like sleeping in a treefort like when we were kids!

Some are built on 4' x 8' chassis, but our's was a 5' x 10', which makes a huge difference on interior space.

Yeah,that approaches the interior space of reg. van. If you built a 'standy' that size, it wouldn't be so bad. If your main thing was lots of travel and decent MPG, this could be a good way to go because something that light could be towed by a car or little truck.

There is a large Build-it-Yourself crowd hanging out in the Teardrop and Tiny Travel Trailer forum. Lots of plans and information on home construction.

There are Off-Road teardrops, with chassis and running gear designed to let you pull em damn near anywhere a Jeep can go.

There is a large Build-it-Yourself crowd hanging out in the Teardrop and Tiny Travel Trailer forum. Lots of plans and information on home construction.

We were members of the TearJerkers.
There are 32 chapters in the US alone, all Canadian provinces, the UK and Austrailia.

It was alotta fun attending Tearjerkers gatherings, and we saw all kinds of different designs of trailers, and neat tricks for setting up shop...(or your campsite). Antique models, manufactured rigs, and lots of cool homebuilts show up. (there are some amazingly creative folks out there!!!)
And they're all crazy about Dutch Ovens too!! Saturday evenings are always pot-lucks, and often times there are Dutch Oven Cook-Offs!! Mmmmmm...everything you can imagine....pot roasts, stews and chillis, cobblers.....MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!
oh, and every evening there's stories, songs, lies, skits and shenanagans around the campfire too!! Good Times.



this was our teardrop right after we got it. We eventually polished it all up, and painted the fenders the same colbalt candy blue as the truck. (they matched!)

Be sure to check out the "Foamies" section if you go to TnTT. Before I bought Wendel (my vintage TT), I was seriously considering building a Foamy. Inexpensive to build and easy to customize!

The old style teardrops had fold down kitchenette in the back. Some of them had a small cabinet inside. Those two just look like packing crates on wheels. No conveniences at all.
