Did you have a leak? And I changed mine every month or two to keep it fresh. It always looked fine with no mold.

No, it was just a hella humid year. I read somewhere humans exhale a gallon of water every night, too. That on top of sweating. A couple of plastic mattress covers or the tarp trick has worked best for us. The tarps are tougher than the fancy mattress covers.
