Man uses van to fight robbers

It sounds like the guy in the van knows how to spin things to protect himself legally:

"The van driver then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into one of the suspects and the building"

and

"Two of the robbers then chased the van driver on foot and tried to assault him with an unknown weapon, but the man defended himself with a razor, cutting one of the robbers, Speziale said. Officers who later responded to the attack were unable to locate a weapon at the scene."


That said, if someone (especially multiple people) attacks you like that, I think it's fair game to use the weapons you have and not get in trouble.
 
Being in New Jersey, the van driver had to be very ingenious in his methods of self-defense. Improvised weapons are generally tolerated by police, but weapons deliberately carried for self-defense will land you in legal hot water.
