"The man was sleeping inside the van when the fire started. It is believed the fire started when a candle tipped over, igniting the inside of the van."

Having an open flame in the van is a terribly bad idea.

It's not clear from the article whether this was just a New Agey candle thing or if he was trying to heat the van with a candle, but those silly flower-pot candles you see all over the Internet are not only dangerous, but they don't work. A typical candle puts out about 250 BTU of heat, not enough to make any significant difference in a volume the size of a van interior. It's like trying to heat your van with a cigarette lighter.

Lots of open flames in rv..pilot lights, etc...it depends on how stable a platform it is on. Even worse to have spillable liquid fuel like some that want alcohol stoves.

My alcohol stove has a cotton wick so it absorbs all the liquid. No spills. ;)

That should say, "Man escapes his own bad decision."

I don't think pilot light's in an RV is a correct assessment as a "open flame".  They are usually behind or in some metal enclosure where they can't tip over and are not close enough to combustible materials.  RV's are very safe.
