I've got two boxes of flooring I bought from LL in Florida that I'm going to install in the class C.  It's the vinyl wood strip though.  I hope that's ok.  Thanks for the info.

All glued wood products off gas formaldehyde. California has very low requirements for "determined by the state of California...". Some people were effected by plywood glue after Catrina. Lawyers will find many ways to sue, and then need the publicity. 98% of all lawyers make the other 2% look bad.

I don't think this is just ambulance chasers. 60 minutes sent the LL stuff to a lab to test to see how much it off-gassed and they said they had never seen anything as high as these. In fact it was so high they thought their equipment was broken and had it tested to see if it was accurate. It was.

Formaldehyde is dangerous at high enough levels and this stuff is way above dangerous levels.

It should give others pause when they only look at the bottom line price. There is no free lunch and a company is cutting some kind of corners, more often than not, to offer 'rock bottom prices.' Just because something is more expensive, doesn't mean the company is greedy. More expensive may not equal better quality but it often times does. Still need to do your homework.

What really bothers me about this story is with the recent housing crisis so many more families are having to rent. Renters don't have much, if any, control over what materials are put into their homes. Most landlords are putting in the cheapest thing they can to have the highest profit.
Some people are more sensitive to small to moderate off gassing than others.

It's a consideration for me about everything I put into my living space. Between my asthma and environmental sensitivities, I'm trying to put either chemically inert substances or items that are older so hopefully most, if not all, off gassing has been done already. Another reason I like used products. I'm only aware of this kind of thing because I've had to be.

Sixty minutes should do an expose' on sixty minutes. Many of their stories are exagerations or outright lies. (For example, the story on teenage suicide and D&D. They did not mention the teenage suiside rate was much smaller for D&D players, just accused D&D of causing suisides.)

LR,
You're right, flooring was made in China!

I've been in a couple of older RV's that should have been long baked out that had very bad chemical smells and I think this might explain them, as both had new flooring.

In a small space with high heat the problem could get really bad.

I heard this story today. I didn't see the show. the way I heard it was with their laminate flooring(stuff that's glued). I wouldn't use laminate flooring anyways, I would use real wood. and yes this flooring came from china so it's really no surprise. I don't even see why 60 minutes is still on the air, they been caught lying and fabricating stories many times. remember when they got caught putting model rocket fuses in chevy truck fuel tanks, they would set them off and say the tank blew up? highdesertranger

Worth noting that much of the plywood used to build out vans will also off-gas formaldehyde. Probably not to the level reported here, but there will be some. I was actually looking at some LL ads regarding flooring in the van, and for the small amount I'd need, I would splurge on solid wood.

If the plywood is covered once installed, how much off gassing still occurs?

And are there any other products out there that we should be aware of...ex. I'm planning on using sheet flooring over the plywood on the floor.

I'm no expert -- apparently, there are sealing treatments which mitigate outgassing, but I wouldn't trust that something porous like fabric or carpet would do the trick.

And I know some carpet comes with its own outgassing issues. No idea about sheet flooring, but if it's synthetic, I'd think it would be suspect.

Of course the real question when it comes to this issue is not so much "does it?" but rather, "how much?" do the research before your build.

In a van, especially on hotter days, I would imagine the enclosed space would concentrate the effect; but since there is very little material, it probably dissipates and becomes a non-issue faster.

Once installed, leave it sit a few days in the sun, open the doors every few hours to vent the gasses, then let it 'cook' some more. A couple weeks of that should eliminate most of the gassing.
My mother recently had new vinyl flooring installed in her house. We could really smell it the first couple weeks, especially when returning from shopping. We don't smell it any more. So I'd think most of the outgassing is temporary, right at first.

Lumber liquidators If you look at the name in it's own right they are liars LOL, they don't liquidate anything. They have products manufactured to sell.

Well,I installed laminate flooring in our house in Ar.so I guess I'm getting gassed. Can I use this excuse to explain my non-conformist behavior to the rest of society? The Ar house is only 650 sq ft. and is only occupied a few months out of the year.Another excuse to stay on the road.I like it.

I am so dumb it takes me an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes....

Ha! That joke never gets old :)
