Howdy folks

wondering if anyone out there knows about a product that could be dash mounted, and would display cell phone signal strength and the carrier it's receiving? would make it so much easier for me to boondock if I could just find a spot and glance at the dash to see how the signal looks, if it wasn't strong, or my carrier for the Aircard, could just keep driving..

so far, havent found anything like that, but keep hoping that someone has made one.. know we have some radio peeps here, so checkin.

I would love that....something for wifi finding too....Dang bro...sounds like a good invention to me.
Bri

have found a few apps for androids that seem to do that.. gonna download an emulator for the laptop and see if they are usable.. probably, with smartphone apps being written to do it, a separate device wouldnt be needed for most folks.. just throwbacks like me that dont like phones <grin>

You can kind of do that with certain APPS on your cellphones. Maybe read up on STUMBLING and WAR DRIVING. am sure this has been done before. Just do not connect to any open WIFI sites as that is illegal.

Not illegal to know they are there. and that a connection is available.

found two apps on the IPHONE. One called SIGNALS that does exactly what you are talking about (will not work on Verizon, and does require a jailbroken iphone, and the $5 fee). And another app called CARRIERCOMP that does part of what you are talking about.

Yep, saw them both.. but I dont have a smartphone, nor can I justify the cost of one so they dont do me any good.. downloaded an app emulator for the laptop, but they wont work for it bcause it's not a phone <grin>

so guess I keep lookin

what you need is a SDR radio application, that will monitor frequencies continuous. it will get expensive and a steep learning curve to do this.
