Hello.

I'd like to head south west in January until late March to escape winter but I'm torn between two ways I can do it. I either can take the motorhome or my car with a large canvas tent.

Here's some of my criteria

1. I'll be alone with my dog.
2. I'll need internet to get work done (I plan on buying at&t and verizon hotspot with a 4g booster and I own a sprint smart phone).
3. I want to only stay in one spot for 5 days or less and then move on.
4. I'd like to get to remote spots where it's very quiet and no one else is around.

I feel like I could go either way. Each way has it's own pros and cons but they seem to come up even to me. Would appreciate any opinions.

Unless specifically designed for high winds, a large canvas tent will not likely withstand the winter winds in the desert sw. Also, if you want to go far into the desert backcountry, your RV probably has higher ground clearance than your car. Between those 2 choices, an RV sounds like the better option.

That being said, I'm snowbirding in a car and taking a small pop up tent that I can take down very easily when the winds blow. The tent is a convenience, not a necessity for the way I live out of my Prius. For more info, click on the link to my blog in my signature block.

Also, welcome to the forum!

Bruce is right but nothing beats a great tent trip plus your more mobile, just stay out of the washes. Welcome to the forum

Thanks for the opinions. I believe I'll be taking the motorhome for this trip. It makes more sense.

I've known several people who came to the desert southwest and thought they could live in tents. They all found out it just isn't practical. None of them did it a second year, they all were in vans.

Last winter was exceptionally nice and we had very few wind storms and a tent would have been okay. So far this winter is shaping up to be unusually good as well, but that can change at any time.
