Hi Max, Have you ever seen an Earthship? They are build out of tires, plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Totally self-contained. Take a look at earthship.com, let me know what you think. Gook Luck, Homeofmyown

I know this is an old post but I really want to respond. I have the same idea, I am moving into an RV to save money for a piece of land and a small house. At first I thought land would probable be about $5000 to $10,000. boy was I niave. Most land next to cities, that have electrical, water, and sewer, is so freaking expensive.

then I found a guy on Youtube who built his house for $2000 and bought his land for around $500. His advice is to buy land that isn't hooked up in anyway and is near a smaller town. And then do solar, rainwater systems, and composting toilet. I kind of like all those ideas so I am thinking about that for a bit down the road. I wrote a blog post about him, you can read it at http://www.tinyhouseshankerings.com/simple-solar-homesteading/

he also has an ebook that you can buy that will teach you how to do what he has done. i haven't bought the book yet but plan to in the future. he says there's lots of cheap land everywhere if you're willing to forego the ulitiy hookups.

Also land is useually cheaper further out in the country.

Im an Aussie, so not sure how much ill be able to help, but ill try.
