I haven't been able to find any actual lists so far through googling or here. Maybe I've just missed them? There are lots of references to numbers such as "70 cities ban sleeping in cars or camping in vehicles" or "42% of cities have laws against sleeping in cars" and references to individual cities, but no actual lists that I"ve found so far.

Does anyone know of such a list? I'd like to just avoid those cities, and researching the individual laws for every single city and town seems impractical.

There's a simpler way...avoid spending the night in larger cities... :)

You can also go to Allstays.com and use the driver app to find out which W/M's, etc. are okay to stay at.

I use it extensively when I'm travelling although once I found out about the trip planner on Freecampsites.net, I haven't stayed at nearly as many W/Ms cause I can find nice campgrounds for free instead.

I would guess virtually all of them do if you read the fine print.  I checked the statues for my own little hometown and found it is indeed illegal.
The question is whether it's enforced.

not that it matters when the cop is tapping on your window.

This is the best answer to the question at hand.

In all of San Diego county it is illegal to occupy a vehicle. I spent two months there and was never bothered by police. In little rinky-dink towns, I've been woken up by the same police officer telling me to move on, even though the town has no posted ordnance against sleeping in vehicles.

Use common sense, move on when you have to, and don't worry about the details.

Check out www.overnightrvparking.com. This guy is quite knowledgeable on cities who've passed ordnances against it. It's also where I learned that your friendly neighborhood RV park association(s) actively LOBBY town to outlaw sleeping in a vehicle. They LITERALLY even provide the towns with a pre-written ordnance that they can read and then pass as their own. Thereby "forcing" campers and their $$ into their members' RV parks. Politics arise wherever money can be found.
