I was lucky, someone stopped and had a pry bar to help me get my butt unclenched from the seat.

Small joke, Happy New Year.

my bfg mud terrains are made in the USA. says so right on the side wall. cdiggy that's why you need road hazard. I get mine at Costco and they have always honored their road hazard no questions asked. highdesertranger
Had road hazard once and got prorated to where the insurgence was worthless. Ever since I have been a pay as you go kind of guy. Plus they tried to dick me and not honor the insurance I paid for. Scumbags. 35 years of driving and this never happened and then twice in 6 months? I'll never own a Goodyear tire again. Just a scam to sell more tires and insurance.

Btw the tire they tried to not cover was a torn side wall on a BFG mud terrain in the 35" area. They said they don't cover "off road use"... Yeah but it wasn't off-road, it was on road with an off road tire. If you are not going to cover the off road tires then don't offer the insurance for that style tire.

I have 20 years experience in underground utilities. Driving equipment with Goodyear tires. Due to "state contract" no other brands were available. During my 20 years there were no unexplained or premature tire failures. A fleet of over 15 vehicles.

It's possible that low production number specialty tires are still manufactured stateside, while others are contracted out overseas.

And I have 1 year experience buying 10 tires and 2 failed. 20% FAILURE rate. They are fired. I don't care if it was just db luck or not. Also, tire companies make tires for new vehicles that are the exact same model tire with exact markings that are formulated different for the car manufacturer. This came from directly from the manufacturers rep with him saying they are formulated different for the MPG rating of the car. So I know that they have the exact same product manufactured differently for the general public than they are manufactured for corporations. My guess is I got some kind of factory second that was sold to me. This is common among many corporations as an example Home Depot is a dumping ground for sub par goods that are sold to unsuspecting consumers.

this is why I buy mine at Costco. they have never questioned anything, they are prorated but that is to be expected. in fact once I put a branch though the side wall of one. I put a spare on, when I got home the tire got shoved in a corner and forgot about. about ten years later I was cleaning up and found the tire. I didn't think they would warranty it, but gave it a shot anyway. well they did warranty it, cost me 63 cents for a new tire. highdesertranger

That is awesome!

I took a look at the UTQG stuff and then read this:

http://tires.about.com/od/understanding_tires/a/Uniform-Tire-Quality-Grading-Explained.htm

Not all it's cracked up to be from the looks of it.

No, nothing is perfect, but it will give you a pretty good feel on difference in tire performance, especially within a brand -

I read the article and wasn't convinced so I looked into the authors profile. Supposedly, working in tire shop for 10 years makes you the world's formost expert: Sean has been straightening, refinishing, welding and replacing wheels for more than a decade, making him one of the most experienced wheel repair specialists in the world.

I imagine there are some engineers out there who's opinion would differ.

Nontheless, no UTQG is not perfect, but at the end of the day its all you got unless you want to buy multiple tires and run your own test.

The other thing worth noting is that tires are actually assembled from multiple pieces of sheet rubber and belting, then pressed and cured. So you can occasionally get a bad tire that does not necessarily indicate poor quality control or design, just a fluke in the materials or assembly, like any other complex product. I had a couple tires years ago that cupped on the tread, the other two were fine. The local tire shop refused to warranty, so I called the manufacturer, and after a little routing around to different people they made the local retailer warranty them completely - didn't cost me a cent even though at that point they had been on the car about a year or so.
