There seems to be a lot of positive remarks about credit unions. What are the best and worst things you can say about a credit union?

Tom

I've been with the same CU for over 25 years. No service charges, ever. My checks are free and speaking with a human is never a problem. When I've had an issue they've bent over backwards to fix it. Even when I was the issue.

Most credit unions have smart phone deposit as well.

I know that technology has truely arrived when I can get a cash withdrawal from my phone!

I had a national bank and switched to a credit union - didn't find that much difference. Now my banking is so simple - just the phone bill I pay online and the ATM card I use for everything that BOA is just fine. I write so few checks (2 in the last 3 months) that the starter checks I got when I opened the account will probably last me all year. If I have to pay $15 for checks at some point, they will probably last me my lifetime at this rate.

I've been with a credit union for the last ten years. No fees, electronic statements, and can withdraw money without a fee from most other credit unions and all 7/11 stores.
When my credit rating got destroyed by an ex five years ago, 5 out of 6 credit cards got cancelled. But not the one from my credit union. So thankful for that!

Does anyone have experience with BB&T bank? Our choices are limited where we live in FL and the credit union there has some of the worst customer service I've ever encountered. Only other choice is SunTrust.

Nice thing about BB&T is it's about 1/4 mile away, anything close is a huge plus when tourist season and snowbird season happen (about nine months out of the year).

I thought that BB&T went out of business, or got merged with someone else in the last several years.  No?  Must admit I haven't been paying attention to U.S. banking for quite a while.

Back in the 90's and early 2000's, I had a BB&T account.  Things went swimmingly for years.  And then, during a period when I wasn't earning a lot, so not depositing a lot, someone somewhere in the bowels of that fine organization decided that I needed to be put on the low-class list or whatever they call it.  After nearly 10 years a customer, and a home mortgage with them, etc.

The result was that I went from no monthly fees to about $12-$15 per month just for checking.  On top of that, there was an ancient monthly automatic withdrawal/payment for a term life insurance policy that expired.  The insurance company had gone out of business and I couldn't contact them.  I told BB&T to stop that payment, which was still going somewhere.  In my mind, it was the same type of request from me as a "stop check" request.  BB&T refused.  They told me that I had to contact the recipient and ask them to stop it.  For my account!  The fact that the recipient was no longer in business (under the original name anyway) made no difference to BB&T.  I was just a nuisance to them.  Even though I wanted the ATM card from that account, I closed it.  High monthly fees plus the inability to control my own account pushed it over the edge for me.

I'd be stunned if they have improved since then.  That said, if you have $500,000 or so to drop in an account with them, I'm sure they'll be putting mints on your pillow.

My 2 cents,

Tom

I had my savings and checking at EECU, a large credit union here in Texas, great service until a person charged my card twice for an extra 500 dollars. The hoops I had to jump thru to get my money back soured me on credit unions, tho I know each are different. I already had my insurance with USAA and just changed my direct deposits and my auto pays to a new card.

I let the EECU account go stagnant until all claims or bills were done and then went and closed both accounts. Service Manager couldn't grasp why I was upset.

In the time I was with my local credit union, FOUR times my debit card was compromised and I had to get a new one issued. 90% of my uses were at Home Depot, the grocery store or gas station. They told me it was a Visa issue traced to Home Depot, but I've never had experiences like that with national banks. No doubt it happens with every bank, but it sure pisses you off when you have a cart full of groceries and your card is declined and the attitude from the CU was always "**** happens, deal with it - now wait 10 days until we can get a new card to you". I never found CU customer service to be any better than a big bank anyway.

Tried to get some questions answered by my od CU in Florida about wiring some money. Transferred to three different people and no one could answer my question, finally got dumped back into voicemail hell and hung up. It was a good reminder about how truly ****** their customer service is. So, I'll just go with a bank and keep a very sharp eye on my accounts.
