As the other "good old boy" from Texas said earlier about luan darkening with stain, isn't luan actually mahogany?  I always think of mahogany as being a dark wood.  You might take a piece to Lowes or HD aand see if they could help with a stain.

I want a light color ceiling. Guess the luan will be painted. Gray?

Aiming for A Southwestern theme.
My original thought was too much gold if you use the gold based fabric,  so use the turquoise. But now that the stain color is uncertain I don't know. Are you covering all the walls with the fabric? If so, I would think it might be a bit overwhelming and claustrophobic, but I don't even have a rig yet, so my opinoins aren't worth much! Good luck. Keep us posted. I'm very interested to see your results.

chiming in late here...of the original question and swatches - the turquoise fabric contrasts much better with the woodgrain. the other fabric has too much of the woodgrain hue in it and it will all just blend together. Would not look bad, but the turquoise will pop better.

I skimmed quickly through the replies, so maybe got this wrong...but keep ceiling a solid, light color only...no patterns, etc...will reflect more light and feel more open.

The only way to tell for sure is to do a test strip.

I'd say Golden Oak is going to be too dark when applied to the Luan. One of the lighter pine colors may come closer to the fabric.

Also keep in mind that you're probably going to want to add polyurethane over top so that it's washable. It will also change the color of the wood at least a little.

Agreed.  I have done some staining projects and this is absolutely the case.  Testing on wood from same batch of wood being used in vehicle is best.  Stain it, let dry, stain again, let dry, poly seal, let dry, poly seal, let dry, third coat of poly is "sugar," then it's sugar-coated and you will have a great idea of how it will match.  As a female, and only my opinion, I like the blue fabric so the whole environment does not look brown.  Best to you in your project!

I would only use the fabric for accent pieces, pillows, throws etc..and use the stain on the walls. That way if you want to change up the look you can easily use pillow covers etc. I think either of those on the walls would be a bit much to look at on a daily basis, would make the space feel smaller and busy & very difficult to change up.

I had to chime in...
While I really like the turquoise color, I agree on all the walls it might be a bit much, can you use it on only one wall? Also if using that one I would go with a lighter color ceiling.

If you use the brown tones you could always pick up the turquoise color on it for the ceiling and throw pillows.

I'm using my comforter with pops of color on it, easy to change out later, but I love the colors. But I do want my furniture/cabinets white to brighten up the inside.

Good Luck!

I'm re-thinking the fabric wall thing, I think it would be too much for me .  I'm thinking just paint the walls. *White ceiling with a hint of brown. What color would look good on the wall? Thinking of adding a Zia Sun symbol shower curtain at the nose section up front, for hiding potty bucket, one of these? http://www.cafepress.com/+zia-symbol+shower-curtains or https://www.showercurtaindesignery.com/products/zia-sun-symbol-shower-curtain-yellow-grey or https://fineartamerica.com/products/zia-sun-linda-henry-shower-curtain.html or https://fineartamerica.com/products/zia-sun-god-symbol-loring-laven-shower-curtain.html ??

Thank you. Keeping that in mind.

I'm now concentrating on getting the ceiling luan panels up and painted. That will take a little while, having to do it alone.

I really appreciate all the suggestion's. Thanks.

Try to find the lightest whitest stain for the ceiling. the tan ceiling with the tan print would be to similar. the blue print is going to be very dark. if you find a white / ivory /cream stain for the ceiling and then just unbleached muslin on the walls with an eight inch runner of the tan fabric along the ceiling of one wall - cut it at the first black line. use the rest for a little curtain or a giant floor pillow. soft skin tone colors and gentle colors will be more inviting. no no to the arrows and the longhorn no - just no. less is more. peace-calm-gentle. IMNSHO.

My female choice would be 1) use the blue fabric on page 1 and only add to one interior wall -- going bold pattern you want less than more 2) paint the other walls a light blue-gray 3) then paint an even lighter blue-gray for the ceiling.

Accent the window curtains and pillows with the same fabric used from the one wall. Additionally, you could cut the bold fabric pattern material line -- the lightest stripe for accents in the kitchen or elsewhere.

or this one?

Now I need a ceiling color and a wall color. Prefer whiteish for ceiling. I'll be using nice looking puck light's on the ceiling from Lowe's. ( I hope mert6706 chooses the first one.)

It's about 2.5x as expensive as luan, but you can buy 1/4" oak plywood at Lowes and Home Depot, same thickness as Luan and it will be a lot lighter in color and look much closer to the color you originally wanted. Luan is a mahogany veneer and mahogany is a dark colored wood, no stain in the world will brighten it. Where you only need a few sheets to do the ceiling the higher cost wouldn't be too bad. I think the wood grain and color in oak is the right look for the fabrics you want

The thread is drifting and severely off-course, but I cannot let that one go unanswered....

A tattoo on my butt?  No, I'm NOT that guy. :dodgy:

Back to the van colors....PLEASE.

Okay. Shower Curtain Ordered. Got a couple suggestions from Lowe's employees(ladies) and they also liked it.

Possible choice for wall color: I really like the "cavern clay"

Now, suggestions for a ceiling color, since the shower curtain is on it's way?

Glad you chose not to go with fabric walls and I really like the shower curtain you chose.  Don't know if this point if you've chosen your wall color but the "cavern clay" wouldn't be my choice.  You're dealing with a small space and that wall color is going to be too dark and does not complement the shower curtain.  Your focal point is now the shower curtain especially since we are talking about a small space.  I thought the "distressed" wall look was good but the blue is a little too intense. Instead I would take the blue down a few notches.  Although to tell you the truth, if your walls are going to be luan, I'd just do the clear coat and leave it.  Put all your decor into fabrics and accents.  If you ever get tired of it, it will be much easier to switch it all out.  I personally love a muted southwestern look and have seen some great kilim pillows that would really complement that shower curtain.

The top one with the gold background. The other one is pretty too, but i originally said the top one because of the wallpaper you were looking at. I believe you have since decided not to use it. Haven't seen this thread for a while. You probably have done a lot since my original look see. I'll check it for updates. Thanks for asking for help from the forum ladies. It's been lots more fun than reading about solar stuff!
