I dumped Microsoft long ago... Ubuntu is not only stable, fully supported, and easy to use, but is free too.

The thing is... new computers come with Windows 8 now.

Actually, so many people are unhappy with Windows 8 that companies like Dell and Hewlett Packard are still offering machines with Windows 7 on them.

You have to order them direct from the website.

Greetings!

Used laptops can be had for under $200 which have WinXP on them. Highly recommended.

Regardless of what you're running, AVG Free & Super Anti-Spyware Free is what you want to keep yourself safe. Not trial versions, get the totally FREE versions.

Cheers!

I am needing to upgrade to a new laptop soon (almost assuredly Win8). What are you using for anti-virus, ad blocking, cookie crumbling, etc. I would appreciate help, as I am not up to all the latest tracking, malware, adds, spyware and whatever else out there that I need to be protected against.
Help would be much appreciated, Spiff

I bought my HP 2000-2d22dx 15.6in Laptop i3 2.5GHz 4GB 750GB DVDRW WiFi from www.cowboom.com for $318 and some change (included shipping). I made sure I got a charger with it too. It came with Norton but I prefer Iobit's Advanced Care System, Malwarebytes, Driver Booster and crap cleaner all of which are downloaded off the internet (will buy the full versions soon when money permits). I have my FireFox set to Do Not Track. I use ixquick as my search engine and they do not track. It's not so much for privacy but for sales pitches.

Greetings!

Iobit's stuff used to be killer, but they have gone kind of rogue in the last year or so, and a lot of people have been having problems with their stuff. They're not good enough for decent virus protection either.

Malwarebytes is okay, but I think Super Anti Spyware does a better job.

I'm not familiar with Driver Booster.

Both CCleaner & Defraggler from Piriform are HIGHLY recommended by most techs.

Cheers!
