Hi karl,<br /><br />Not too many on CL around here. &nbsp;Don't know why, because I'm surrounded by worker bees. &nbsp;N FL economy is so bad, tho, that I think everything that could be ripped up or out and sold already has been for most folks. &nbsp;<br /><br />JOSEPHINE UPDATE:<br /><br />Talked to the van vet today. &nbsp;Good news and bad news. &nbsp;They confirmed that there is nothing big wrong with the van. &nbsp;Yay!!! &nbsp;So our initial judgement was right, and they also confirm that there are a bunch of little maintenancy-type things that need to be done.<br /><br />1. Coolant leak in a seal.<br />2. Some misc seal leaks in the tranny, but tranny itself is good. &nbsp;They want to service her.<br />With a Dodge van you have to drop the tranny to replace the freezer plug (forgive me if that is not tranny related, but it is one of the things that needed to be replaced) and the other seals that need it, so they will go ahead with the service.<br />3. Complete tune up as she's been driven only about 200 miles in the past year and a half, and driven hard under load before that. &nbsp;Needs some things changed, including the oil, etc.<br />That's the first part.<br /><br />The next when I can afford it (getting ready to sell the camper pop-up to pay for this)<br />For her to tow safely, she needs<br />4. All four shocks replaced.<br />5. &nbsp;Front brakes: wheel bearings packed, rotors replaced (they are too far gone to fix, I did ask) and pads. &nbsp;<br /><br />These guys have a good relationship with some very good friends of mine, and have been told that they must be fair with me, so I am trusting them. They have an excellent and long-standing reputation for doing good repair.<br /><br />All the repairs above come to about $1200. &nbsp;A bit less than the cost of the van to begin with. &nbsp;It brings the total price of the van to about $2500. &nbsp;I actually expected that, but did not expect to get the low miles and the 4 new tires into the mix. &nbsp;So I'm OK with it, as long as I can scrape the money together to do it. &nbsp;Wish I was a mechanic and not an old, vision losing, achy person who has to depend on others to fix her vehicle, but it is what it is. &nbsp;Here's hoping these folks live up to the reputation. &nbsp;I'm sure they will. &nbsp;In my rural neighborhood, you don't stay in business in the same shop for 30 years if you make your living screwing people out of money. &nbsp;<img src="/images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif" alt="" align="absmiddle" border="0" /><br /><br />So this is the first and most important thing to me: &nbsp;making sure she is mechanically sound and safe and can pull me, my furry crew, and a small cargo trailer from FL to CA with a few stops in between for visits, and be relatively crisis free. &nbsp;Goddess willin'.
 
Sounds great Marie....Really glad to hear that. You are going to be in great shape!<br /><br />If you were an old vision losing , achy person like me and you were a mechanic you might be saying things like , "Dammit, I wish I didn't know how to do this!"&nbsp; Believe me that kept me from letting some younger mechanic do the work for way, way too long!<br /><br />Count your blessings that you don't have to lie underneath the van and drop the tranny without a lift...there is a good reason those guys get paid well for it...<br />Peace,<br />Bri

Angeli, I'm soooooooo happy you finally got your van!!!!! It's been a long time commin! Do you think there's any chance you'll make it to the desert this winter? I know you really wated to make the RTR. I am just barely gonna make it, had to stick around SC longer than expected cause of some health issues and Dr. appt.'s. But, we will be there eventually and it would be so great to see you there! Good luck with fixin up your van, I'm sure it's gonna be wonderful for you!!

I'm glad to hear the good news.&nbsp; No expert here, but you might want to ask about air shaocks when you get them replaced, for the rear. Don't know how much weight you plan to load or pull, so it's just a thought. Putting them on the Panserbjorn before we go out again, but we've got about a 4000+ lb load.
 
I would recommend not putting air shocks or spring loaded shocks on a Dodge Van. &nbsp;The upper shock mounts are not designed to help support the weight of the vehicle. I know of 2 reports of a mangled frame from using these on &nbsp;Dodge, and repairs cost significantly more than the other options to increase &nbsp;rear spring rate<br /><br />An Add a leaf helper spring, or Suspension airbags are a much better Idea. &nbsp;I went with the latter. &nbsp;Firestone Ride rites.

I do have air shocks on my AstroChinookie that it came to me with and I like them but I do see the wisdom in this info.....I am not overloaded and try to keep it that way.<br /><br />If my van was newer and I was younger I think I would go for a steel spring pack instead of the composite one piece spring these earlier Astrovans came with....<br />Thanks wrcsixeight...<br />Bri<br />Bri
 
As I am lead to understand by my mechanic, the air shocks are not designed to take the load, but ease the pressure on the springs. He recommended the air shocks. I asked about helper springs and air bags, and he advised they were not needed. Just passing on the info from a friend who owned his own shop for 39 years. I can't offer a personal opinion.
 
Seraphim, WRC, and Bri,<br /><br />Thanks so much for the info. &nbsp;I am trying to listen to everything and absorb and learn. &nbsp;And all your advice is very much appreciated. &nbsp;<br /><br />Since I am planning on living in van pretty simply, there won't be much extra weight in it. &nbsp;True, I could stand to lose a few, and the Mooch is 80 lbs herself, the terrible twins are 14 and 18 lbs respectively. &nbsp;No built in cabinets at this time, so load should be pretty light. &nbsp;I'll be camping very simply, with light equipment in it till I reach CA and can spend some time with the actual insulating and other more complicated conversion matters. &nbsp;And then there will be the added rack and solar. &nbsp;I guess the heaviest weight there is the batteries. &nbsp;<br /><br />Pulling a 5 X 8 or 10 cargo trailer, if I can find one for a decent price. &nbsp;Of course I do know that all this stuff adds up.<br /><br />It is a 3/4 ton van, so I'll be trying to keep the load a bit lite. &nbsp;I'm aiming for no more than 2500 lbs absolute max tow weight.<br /><br />Maybe I should sit with a list and go thru the weights I'll be adding. &nbsp;That would help any decisions about the type of shocks, etc, wouldn't it? &nbsp;I must sound sort of clueless. &nbsp;Sorry. &nbsp;<br /><br /><img src="/images/boards/smilies/rolleyes.gif" /><br /><br />Actually, the more I think it, the better it sounds to place everything that I have for the van already and the trailer, apart from the other 'stuff' in my life, and go thru the weights. &nbsp;I can estimate the weight of the stuff I don't have (in reality, I already have almost everything I need, and anything I don't have now, I probably won't be able to afford before I leave) and add the weights of the van and the trailer. &nbsp;It may take awhile, but it would help to know what I'm dealing with, and how much stuff I actually will have in there with me. &nbsp;Maybe it might even help me get rid of the stuff that won't be going. &nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="/images/boards/smilies/idea.gif" /><br /><br />Thank you again for your advice! &nbsp;Please keep it coming!!!<br /><br /><br />
 
I'd ask an expert about the shocks - I was merely passing on an opinion lol.<br /><br />wrcsixeight may well be right.<br /><br />Wouldn't hurt to weigh the rig once packed, with driver, passenger and trailer.<br /><br />Maximum towing weight may be around 3500 lbs and maximum payload about 1200 lbs.&nbsp; I think the maximum payload includes tongue weight (from the trailer) but I'm not sure.&nbsp; Bob may have a turorial here on vehicle weights...
