is my water pump dead?

Was trying to remove my water pump in order to install an accumulator tank, got the inlet side off, couldn't get the other, so decided to put it back and call it a night. I don't think I reversed the polarity when I reconnected it, but when I switched it on it just whirred in place, not moving water. Tried the wires the other way and got the same thing. I let it run for a bit. There was just air in the system. Disregard...

My water pump will do that too. Usually it just lost it's "prime".
I sometimes have to disconnect a line somewhere after the pump and suck on it a little to get the air out.
