While browsing checking prices on inverters I noticed the inverter/chargers. What is it charging? Does it replace the old house charger? Excuse my ignorance but I am a lost duck with this stuff.

The charger part of the inverter charges the batteries.

I believe they switch all AC loads from inverter to grid when plugged into the grid, and the charger then 3 stage charges the batteries, automatically.

I think some of them are very good chargers with programmable setpoints.

i cannot say I am familiar with them and exactly how they function.

I am more of the separate inverter separate charger mindset as I don't really want anything mindlessly automatic

Seems the inverter chargers are $,$$$

SW is correct.

Also note some have an additional feature when you exceed the load spec'd from shore power, will combine inverted AC from battery with shore pass-through, then resume pass-through only and go back to charging once the load drops.

The switching is fast enough even sensitive electronics don't notice.

I didn't know they had combined versions. My inverter provides power for 110 appliances from my 12V batteries. My converter takes shore power and uses it to charge the batteries, as well as powering my 110v appliances

They have them but as SternWake says you pay a premium for them. I asked because my trailer is an older one and I may need a better charger than the one in it. I don't know .

The disadvantage, of course, is that if it fails, you lose BOTH functions, the inverter AND the charger.

The converter in your older trailer is likely not a very good charger.

Iota or Progressive dynamics would be what i would recommend replacing it with.

Depends on how much battery you have, but the PD9245-14.8 would be great for a pair of golf cart batteries.

One can find the PD9245 in the regular 14.4v version for cheaper, but there are reports of fakes being sold.
The 14.8v version will charge faster in the 80% to 100% state of charge range, and could better prevent sulfation in partial state of charge cycling when recharging via generator and one does not want to run the generator for 4 additional hours just to squeeze in that last 20%.
