Hi folks
I have an opportunity to get 2 6v batteries off a guy for $50 a piece.
He has had them for three years and they have been kept charged with 100 watt solar panel.
He said they were in good shape but he is selling the rv they were in and the people do not want the solar setup. he said he would test the charge and specific gravity in front of me so I know they are good. I have no way of knowinf when I get there if they were just removed from the charge circuit so the volt meter test I assume means nothing. Is the specific gravity test good and what should I look for for a good used battery??

thanks in advance
rick

They may be worth 25% $ of new. Look for distortion in the cases, they should be squared and not bulged. they should show no sign of corrosion on the terminals. look into the caps, should look clean, the plates should not be but a little white. SG only indicates they take a charge, not how long they hold it. The SG should be very equal between cells. Take them to auto store as NAPA and do a load test on them. 25% $ new would be fair if battery passes test.

Briefly tilt the batteries 45 degrees in all 4 quadrants, then see how much positive plate material swirling around in the electrolyte when you suck it into the hydrometer.

The clearer the better.

The actual numbers on the float don't mean a lot without former readings of the same battery to compare it with, and even then it will only tell you how fully charged it is, or isn't. Not the actual capacity remaining.

50$ is too high unless they are in excellent condition. 3 years old. even floated and never discharged, they are 3 years old. batteries are rented.

thanks, I guess I'll pass on these on wait to find new ones.
Here in MA they run $200 each.

Lead-acid Battery prices usually include exchange, about $20 on a golf-cart battery depending on the current lead price. So they are worth at least that.

Here in SJ the deposit on a new battery runs to about 15.00 for the large truck sizes and less about 8:00 for standard. We sometime get more at the junk aaa recycle yard.

Sams club sells 6v golf cart Deka batteries for under $100 each. Note they are labeled duracell when sold at samsclub.
I exchanged regular car batteries for recycling, they didn't care that they were smaller.

I tried load testing golf cart batteries. While it did work I don't really plan on doing that again. You have to run so many amps that connections start smoking and glowing. Its not really good for the batteries.

edit* I think if you don't have a samsclub membership you can still shop there, but they charge 3% more.

I pay 80.00 each for interstate 6v cart batteries from a local cart dealer,, they are 208ah and new,,so wouldnt think 50.00 for 3yo batt's is very good!
