Ok Im deaf &nbsp;so I think I have a few challenges living on the road. Or maybe not cause I haven't&nbsp;experienced&nbsp;it yet. Im planning to get some kind of motion&nbsp;detector&nbsp;or a flashing baby&nbsp;monitor to see if that would help. My only concern if the police DO find out Im there and DO NOT know I'm deaf. Maybe a simple sign in the window? Deaf inside? So does anybody here have challenges? Maybe not saying because everybody will tell you :You can't do this living on the road. what if......." You fill in the blank spots.<div><br></div><div>I found this</div><div><a href="http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/articles/visorcards.htm" target="_blank">http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/articles/visorcards.htm</a></div>

<P><FONT size=3>I think the visor cards are a great idea!&nbsp; They certainly couldn't hurt.&nbsp; I'd get one for the rear window, too!</FONT></P>

Oh I like! Very colorful and yes like you said the flashlight would see it clearly. Its from UK so the shipping would be high but its&nbsp;probably&nbsp;worth it.&nbsp;<div>Thanks</div>

<div>What would work for me, if I was in "the man's" position:</div><div><div><br></div><div>1. &nbsp;First thing I do is run the plate before contact, and the first thing that catches eye detail is the license plate. &nbsp;So, why not go to the local mall and have some chrome with white letter license (or colorful) plates frames made, that read, "DEAF DRIVER" (top part of frame) and "ON BOARD" (bottom of frame). &nbsp; Get front &amp; back frames (in case officer approaches from the front). &nbsp; The officer will (should) get the hint...&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>2. &nbsp;Now, if you happen to get a not-so-bright officer, who doesn't notice the license plate frames, I would print this out (click on attached image) and place it directly in front of the VIN#, located at the drivers side bottom part of windshield (when parked). &nbsp;Many times, license plates are stolen (switched) from a similar vehicles and the original owners never know. &nbsp;Officers should know this and SHOULD be verifying the VIN# via the windshield. &nbsp;</div></div><div><br></div><div>And honestly, I've run into your situation and have given similar advice. &nbsp;Believe me, if an officer thinks you're fast asleep AND deaf, he/she probably won't bother you. &nbsp;It's just not worth the hassle of banging on windows and stressing out all involved... &nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><p class="p_self pic_padding" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); padding-top: 2px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 2px; padding-left: 3px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 4px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 4px; "><br></p><p class="p_self pic_padding" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); padding-top: 2px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 2px; padding-left: 3px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 4px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 4px; ">FYI, The "driveway alert system" sold for 17.99 at harbor freight has sound AND LED light flashes to alert of anyone coming near your vehicle. &nbsp;You could disable the speaker wire and rely on the red LED optics. &nbsp;Both run on batteries and last for 4-6 months. &nbsp;They may have it at walmart/target, also...</p></span></div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-driveway-alert-system-93068.html" target="_blank">http://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-driveway-alert-system-93068.html</a></div><div><br></div><div>I have the sensor&nbsp;camouflaged&nbsp;with siliconed, fake plant leaves. &nbsp;I hide it outside, facing my van, and it warns me of anything near me.... &nbsp;Gunner hears them WAY before they get within range of the alert system, so I mainly use mine when I camp alone. &nbsp;It would be ideal for you...</div><div><br></div><div>Hope this helps</div><div><br></div><div>AJ</div><div><br></div>

Tour what great&nbsp;information!!! Im def going to do what you say. I'll have to google where I can buy those plate thingies. Maybe Amazon or ebay may have some sellers. I'll look into the&nbsp;driver alert system too. Thanks.<div>I which I had a dog like Gunner he must be great company too. Maybe in the future I'll be getting a dog right now is not a good time.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>I put this on hoping if another Van dweller comes on and see's this he/she will not think its impossible. They may have to do some things to make it easier for them but not impossible.&nbsp;</div>

May work, IF you have one for every window...lol &nbsp; Without knowing its sensitivity, its hard to tell... &nbsp;But if it were me, I'd wanna know who's comin', before they got there...lol &nbsp;<div><br></div><div>Someone banging on my windows could provoke an automatic, involuntary defense response... or.... a heart attack. &nbsp; lol&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>FYI, the driveway alart handset vibrates (in addition to the lights and sound) when it goes off. &nbsp;You could keep it next to you, and when it goes off, at least you know you have about 25 feet to prepare....</div><div><br></div><div>LOL... That's the mastermind attributes kicking in again...<br><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

She

Bear in mind you're advertising the information to anyone who wanders by the van if you put a sign out. Might it attract unwanted attention? *shrug*

AJ

Pulling up on a suspicious van at night, the officer won't be looking at license plates frames: he'll be watching the van windows for signs of a threat. 'Not-so-bright' would have nothing to do with it.

Ok something new to think about. &nbsp;HHMMM. Thinking. Ok back to drawing board cause if I was a cop what would the 1st thing I do ...just as you said. Who cares where Im from...right? The plate part would come later. So Im confused&nbsp;<img border="0" align="absmiddle" src="https://vanlivingforum.com/images/boards/smilies/confused.gif">&nbsp;What to do? I still think I need a way of knowing when someone is knocking on the van. So some sort of gadget like Tour said.<div><br></div><div>BTW I love your siggy but I'm Gods fav...sorry. &nbsp;LOL</div>

She, does your license state you are hearing disabled? <br><br>Have you ever considered a working animal? Even cats and rats can be trained to tell you when someone is knocking on the door <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle"><br><br>

Keep the card with you inside. Someone knocks and the vibration wakes you, have the card ready to show the officer. The officer will call out your tag to the dispatch as he spotlights it - he's just not going to study the license plate frame. if it's not a police officer, have the police number in speed dial. Repeat your location, problem, and your hearing difficulties. Eventually the dispatcher will get the message and send a unit. If it's a police officer, turn on the interior light so the officer can see no threats. Don't use 911 on a cell phone unless youre in the city where you bought the bought the phone - it will default to that city.

Going to go the animal control cause they put their dogs to sleep after a very&nbsp;brief&nbsp;time....sucks.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\</div>

She,<div>you said you have little Rat friends right? Someone posted this on another area of this forum, but apartment complexes usually are good places to park at, too... If you pretend like you're a resident, you will blend right in.&nbsp;
