Ive got some friends that just bought a boat in Washington and I'm really considering going up there for a month or two, I'm just hesitant of the higher elevation areas that may be icy and a bad recipe for hauling a trailer.

Anyone have experience with winter driving it?

The worst summit your going to hit is the Siskiyou Summit on the CA/OR border. Just a shade over 4500ft I believe. Look up the website "Tripcheck". It has lots of camera's in Oregon on the Hwy's etc...., and a pretty reliable forcast. We have a storm coming in pretty good right now, but Oregon is usually pretty mild and just rain.
If you hit it between storms, no biggie

It's cold here in WA right now. Personally, I wouldn't want to be anywhere around a boat. Wait until spring.

Get the boat, and take it to the Yacht Club in Quartzsite.

I'm in Arizona until mid February at least. Although Ehrenberg is too warm for me atm, looking forward to the 10 defree temp drop coming.

I've ordered quite a few camping things being custom made going to the post office, so that's keeping me in the area.

The friends are hardcore into gold prospecting, I believe they have a dredge as well. They offered to let me stay with them in their trailer or boat, but then there's the issue of putting the camper in RV storage and all the ones around here seem to have some shady reviews.

Going up US95 to Fallon, saw more than a few boats (not small boats) dry docked on the sand with a mooring rope tie down, apparently waiting for a flood.

Oh, I should mention that when I lived on a 100 yr flood plain on the banks of the Passaic River in NJ, during the six years we lived there I used both a small sailboat and a canoe in my yard during several floods. Been there, did that.

Have we met--if not lets do!!! If memory serves you are a young guy, right? I've got a very busy day tomorrow, but stop by anyway. Do you know about....

  • We meet for a group walk at 5:00 pm fairly close to my rig.
  • There is a pizza party at my place Saturday at 2:00 pm. I'm providing the pizza, you bring your own drink and a chair. If you really want to bring something then a dessert or salad.
Bob

Nope we haven't met yet, and your memory serves correct, that's me.

Are you where the groups at right now, Diane had the flag up for a while there. I never used checked how far in I went but I'm right before the dirt road goes back down into the washout/ok gravel pit thing.

Red truck, 21 foot fifth wheel.

If I remember correctly I think I read somewhere that you got here a few days ago right when a rig got here that has what I think you have: van, pull behind trailer both white? Though I'm sure that's common out here. If that's you were only a couple hundred yards apart.

I don't like leashing my dog so stayed father away from the main group.

We don't leash our dogs here, that will only be at the RTR and only because there will be a huge amount of people and dogs in a small area. Plus, it's guaranteed that there will be Rangers there. Not that many people here and no Rangers.

No I sold my trailer, just my van with a ladder rack on top and a box on back--pretty distinctive!

I think I know where you are right over by the sign where the road drops into the ditch?

Are you going to Dianes on the River for the party? Grab me then if I don't come by before. On Saturday at 2:00, drive around and you'll see the group at my place eating pizza!!

Oopslala, why don't you drive your ridge to gold-mining site and live in it there?

Yeah I figured he wouldn't be an issue. A bit of it is I like listening to music loud occasionally and I'm a bit of a loner most the time, haven't wondered over to the area where everyone's at yet.

Yep I'm right near the sign, if you're going towards the ditch to go down I'm on the left right on the ridge before it drops down into the ditch.

I'm considering going to her party, it'll depend on the wind though. It gets pretty hellacious and that's the one thing I hate about out here so far, we'll see about that.

Are you right with the group or somewhere else?

Train what goldmine? When I was at the market today someone actually mentioned an old mine in quartzsite, but she said it's a pretty hard hike and scary drive to get there.

If you want out of the wind then down here on the river is the place to be.

Last year a bunch of us moved down here in the middle of a really bad dust storm. We could sit in our campsite down here and see the clouds of dust on the horizon. We had nothing but a mild breeze that barely stirred the trees while up on the plateau I could hardly see 30'.
