How long can you stay away from your state?

Washington state does not care how long I am away from it as long as I am not declaring myself a resident of another state.

I don't think any state cares how long we're away, as long as they still get our taxes and fees.

That residential legal argument just sounds like a rationalization for harassment - don’t play along.

I’ve only been aware of it being used in the Coconino around Sedona. I live in Colorado, just commented today on a Forest management plan for the GMUG in west central CO which makes similar rationalizations for closing down dispersed sites.

It’s a completely shameful abuse of our Constitutional system of law.

Be aware also that many states require you to become a resident if you are employed for as little as 10 days. Many campground hosts are considered paid employees so check it out before you accept a position even if it is just for a site, I believe California used to be one of the states that checked things like this. I was stopped once because I failed to signal a turn onto the interstate ramp, had an out of state plate and a month's worth of food visible in the car. I was visiting my son who was working in the state remotely and picked up the food for him on the way to visit satisfied the officer and got me a warning for the turn signal which would be dated and on record if he saw me again. In that particular state it was a $500 fine at that time. I'm always visiting in any state that is not my state of residence, especially if I get asked and happy to leave rather than pay a fine! If you draw a pension many western states tax them for the period you work there even if your home state does not! Be sure you are aware before you document your stays or seek employment!

I think you could travel full time out of state as long as you are a us citizen. You would still be in your country. If you were to travel to Canada or another country out of the us I believe there is a time limit, maybe 6 months.

If you are a U.S. citizen you may stay abroad indefinitely and return at any time, there is no limit. As for living on public land you may not do that. The government cannot force you to have a home. You could live with friends and family all your life and thousands do. In order to have a drivers license, social security check they are going to want a physical address as well as a mailing address. The physical address does not have to be your actual home just one that they can contact you through. The new ( required by 2020 ) drivers license will be needed to enter government buildings, fly and cross international borders. Think Mexico and Canada. This license has some very strict proof of residence requirements that many will not be able to provide.

A passport will get you on an airplane, across international borders and access to government buildings too so the enhanced drivers license is not required. Cheaper than a passport though.

The requirements for a passport are as stringent as the new license.

Dear Brother owl, that's true, however the Federal government is somewhat more competent than the average county clerk, in my experience, plus, the passport does not have your address on it while still having Magical Powers of Persuasion with the aforementioned county clerk & other entities. :)

Last year, I got a new passport (the cheaper "card" version), using my expired passport, birth certificate, and almost expired driver's license, then used it to get some other things including a Library card.
By then I had made three failed attempts to renew my driver's license, and was planning to use the passport to renew it, but tried one other county and got the Mythical Competent county clerk. :)
He offered to do a Real ID, but I politely declined, purely as a meaningless-to-all-but-me act of rebellion.

Note that I'm doubly "vulnerable", both because I'm homeless and because there is a tiny spelling discrepancy between my birth certificate and other IDs. The spelling issue has been reported by many as a problem when dealing with below average county clerks.

Bottom line:
If you're vulnerable (all true full-timers are), or have the potential to become so, then it's worth the modest cost for a Passport Card.
Bonus: They're good for ten years. :)
I had no problem getting it mailed to my PO box, though it did not show up in USPS' "Informed Delivery" (twerps!).

Doubly so "Mythical Competent county clerk", a rare male version.

There is one lone male at the Pahrump DMV. He handles the dirty outside work of VIN inspections.

Wayne, LOL! :)

Just to clarify, I posted that not as criticism of anybody.
Owl is now on many of our Hero lists, as a Comforter of the Dying, plus is (in spirit) an Eater of Nocturnal van-chomping Rodents. ;)

I've been a Nomad for a quarter century, and a passport really is a Magical item when dealing with governmental Pakleds.
(Pakleds == a mythical Star Trek species known for their obtuseness. )

According to my auto insurance company, I must stay at least 10 months in my home state. But what they don't know can't hurt them.

That is for the rate they quoted you. If you tell them that you vacation quite often out of state that requirement would likely be dropped or the quote adjusted.

@Kaylee what ? lol   plus is (in spirit) an Eater of Nocturnal van-chomping Rodents.

Subsequent to my post upthread about the "Mythical Competent county clerk" (henceforth: "MCCC"), I remembered another awesome encounter:
Pennington county SD, when I registered my van as a non-resident Nomad (yes, that's a legit & remarkably easy thing... provided you find a MCCC).
I barely had to say anything for the awesome clerk to grok in fullness, and do all the paperwork for me (I did have my ID, sufficient cash, the bill-of-sale & "affidavit" all ready).

Whenever I encounter one of these precious people, it renews my Hope in the future of humanity. :)

Which "what"?!? :)

It was a merging (in my brain) of two posts/threads...
The "eater" was in reference to your delight at my Owl vs rodent close encounter a few weeks ago.
The "chomping" was a reference to a recent thread asking about rodents chomping at van components.
I had been tempted to post that a pet owl would be a good solution, but was worried someone might try it - Owls should be Free, not captive. :)
