I've always noticed the corrosion at the battery terminals forms faster and more pronounced when the flooded battery is in an enclosed area with minimal/no ventilation. That 'captured' sulfuric acid mist goes to town attacking everything it can.
i remember lifting one plywood lid over a flooded battery inside a truck camper, and it was as soft as if it was eaten by termites, and the underside was soft and black and green and made my eyes water and my fingers burn.
Might want to scrub some baking soda into the plywood lid and watch it fizz.
