As I understand it, most "waterless shampoo" is just cornstarch, and the spray-on "waterless shampoo" that you can find in camping stores is just alcohol.

In a pinch when I've been in a hurry, I've "shampoo'd" my hair with plain ole alcohol-based hand sanitizer, by rubbing a handful on and toweling it till it dries. Probably wouldn't do it all the time, but as a temporary quick fix it seems to do the trick.

That works great for me, lenny, that or straight rubbing alcohol. Problem is, it releases the oils but doesn't really remove them. So when I do that, I'll run a washcloth through my hair, or even some paper towels, at the same time.

It's not a flawless technique, but pretty good and it completely removes odors.

Job's not done until the ears are done, though.

I have short hair and spray my hair with full-strength vinegar, wait 30 seconds and then use a microfiber towel to absorb the oil/dirt.

I don't know that I'd wanna smell like vinegar, though......

;)

Either of those will make you wanna pass out for at least the first 30 seconds ...

I learned the hard way doing a homemade shampoo on my hair that even diluted apple cider vinegar stings like crazy when it drips into your eyes. Holy cowz that hurt!

But the shampoo recipe worked so well that I still use it, I'm just super careful about keeping it out of my eyes.

Btw - the recipe is below if anyone's interested. It won't suds up like regular shampoo, but gets your hair squeeky clean. Shake before use and rinse well.

Mix 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar with 3 tablespoons glycerin and 1teaspoon flaxseed oil (or you can use another oil of your choice) I usually pour it in a catsup-type squeeze bottle (got mine at Dollar tree) and keep it refrigerated when not in use. Keeps for a couple months. Mine never lasts that long 'cuz I have long hair so I use it up before 2months.

After about an hour I don't notice the ACV smell. Maybe it goes away, maybe I've just acclimated my nose to it?? Maybe I should start asking strangers if they smell pickles or salad dressing when I'm around. Lol.

Cool. Another useful thread for things to try, regarding shampooing. It's the one aspect of van living/camping that I haven't quite solved as yet. Previously the best idea I heard was from txsturgis, the Pirate Captain, who suggested watering-down regular shampoo, so it rinses out easier. Multiple things to try.

Pure vinegar would kill my sinuses, and would certainly keep the boys away (for you girls).

Cornstarch, rub a handful through your hair ,let set and brush out. Works on pets too (especially if they get fleas) Also very good if oh horrors, you run into lice, which in some places you do.
