Make sure to include to the top of the A/C unit.  ;)
I remember one year in Vegas, a semi trailer hit the bridge. This truck driver knew his business! He went after the city or state for posting the wrong height that was too short by a couple inches. Come to find out, every time they repaved the road, it gained an inch, and was a couple inches shorter than posted. I don't know what happened after that, but I'll bet they don't do that again, at least until they forget again. :p

Happens often enough that I've heard many rv'ers now program their truck/rv gps to their rig height plus 6 - 8in. to compensate

My motorhome is 12' to the top of the stacks; I had to "learn" to pay attention to height restrictions.

Measuring the height of my fifth wheel is in the works to do this summer after the snow melt...and tape it to the dashboard of my truck!

Great idea!

Sort of sad to watch a company driver as he loses his job. You would think the sign and the flashing lights would be a hint.

There is a low railroad bridge that has only an inconspicuous sign a ways back with no flashing lights at all. As I drove by one day I noticed an eighteen wheeler with trailer that stopped in time, but couldn't back up due to traffic. I volunteered my services of blocking and flagging traffic while signalling him it was clear to back up. He backed up far enough to make a left, thanked me, and was on his way.

As a bit of trivia, with all those signs and flashing lights, the railroad also installed a giant steel I-beam facing traffic at the height of the bridge.... they were tired of people hitting the bridge directly and damaging it, so what you see shearing off the top of trucks is actually making contact with the steel beam they installed to protect their bridge!

Parking garage in san antonio almost got me, the turn in was beside the building, no indication of height once locked in a lane to entrance, go round corner ( think u turn) annnnd bam, 6'8 clearance. I have a roof rack. Had to have people stop traffic and move cars so i could get out. Gotta love the genius who designed one way entrances only into a garage that begin on a different street.

What a great idea!!!!
Wish I had thought of that.  No, we have never had any problems with out RV, but what a great idea.
Thanks, that will be the first thing we do, when we uncover our Motorhome, soon I hope.

IMO someone who drives any vehicle that is larger than the "average" needs to be unafraid to direct traffic! Thanks for the stories here... makes me feel better about my stopping midst traffic and refusing to go with the flow into Mexico (sounds like a song title)...

...and less afraid of realizing that in spite of all our best efforts we WILL at some time get caught in a situation that requires a U turn or pass-by or back-up. Shouldn't be a big deal, a bit of an inconvenience upon other driver's side, and time delay and a bit of frustration perhaps on our part ... then? ON WITH THE DAY! Oh, the places we'll go! :D

I have pity and empathy for the RV owners, but for those driving trucks, heck when I was doing that (Straight truck driving delivery) I KNEW that I had to know the height of that truck. One mistake and my cargo and my job would be toast. Now it's not too common for short bridges out here, but there's plenty of places with low height entrances...

One thing I noticed on my drive to and from the RTR was the height of the overpasses... and thinking of all the wasted space for the 15' high ones when all the others on the same, no other entry/exit road were only like 13' :)

Doesn't always make sense, does it? :-/

The blind looking guy @ 3:49 standing under the bridge must have have wet his pants, when the truck hit , bet nobody caught that.

Back east, years ago, I believe the Penn. Turnpike had some of the overpasses that were arches and you had to be dead center to clear because the posted height was the center of the arch!

Regular van with a ladder rack -- beware of parking structures

Yeah. that had to be a spooky moment for him.

Recently, while driving my "new to me" RV, I came to a bridge that said 10'10". The guy I bought it from said it was 10'8". I must admit that I ducked my head as we went under. Apparently he was right!   :)

If I was in doubt, I would have stopped, got out and looked. If you rip your roof off, it's gonna be expensive.
