Well, I'm taking the plunge.  The lease on my over-priced apartment runs out on the first of May, so I bought a van and am taking my chances on living free.  I wanted to introduce myself to you all since...well...I guess we'll be neighbors in a sense.  I'm not at all nervous about living in the van, but I am a little nervous that I'll encounter the police and this city's draconian vagrancy laws.  Here's to hoping that never happens.

Talk soon,

C.

Welcome, Corvus,

So you already have the van and have converted it for living?

Sounds like you plan or need to stay in town? As HDR mentioned, you can get better tips if you share a bit more info.

But either way, glad you are now a community member. There are threads on about any topic you can come up with here. And you can open your own "Captain's Log" to keep us updated on your experiences if you choose to.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all of your support!

I'm based in DC and (unfortunately) will have to stay here for work. I recently purchased a 2001 Ford E-250. The bad news is, the van isn't yet converted. The good news is, that means I'll have lots of pictures to share as I transform it from cargo van to live-in van. The time-frame obviously isn't ideal--I planned on making this move in about a year or so. But things with my apartment happened kind of fast, so I figured this was the universe's way of giving me the push I needed to make this transition.

There are a lot of tribe members with build threads here.
Some very impressive ideas IMHO.
Reading and seeing some of those while living in it before you finish the interior will give you insight to what will and won't work for you.
All you need to start out is the bare essentials ,which can probably be incorporated into the build.

Good luck and all the best. I am also new to living in my van; I just moved into it April 1st and I'm learning what works/doesn't work. It's interesting for me since I work overnights at a homeless shelter. Therefore, my biggest issue is sleeping during the day. I'm figuring it out as a co-worker and his girlfriend are letting me sleep in their driveway for now.
