Hi everyone after months of reading and watching videos getting ready to sell everything and start my journey.A nlittle about me im 58 lost my wife of 18 years to cancer im disabled bad back so ill have a small income to start my journey.Im going to rig up space in back of my pickup.only got a topper cap so not a lot of space I got no were to go or anyone with me so going to be a new life style.I plan on using freecampsites.net to travel country.Just going from one camp site to another staying the max at each one installing inverter for electric and some camping gear.Hoping to run into other travelers along the way

I'm from Pittsburgh myself... great place to not spend the winter ;)

Remember that sleeping well and comfortably is a big part of being happy with a mobile lifestyle... a bad back + a topper might be tough. Slide in campers could offer some more sleeping options. Be sure to spend some nights in the truck before you commit to it...

Hi brad Good advice but kinda limited on funds.Thinking of using tent also with foldup cot

Welcome aboard ridgerunner !

My first camper was just like yours , a pickup with a cap.
I built a short platform for the bed in front with tubs underneath and a couple of compartments on both sides enclosing the wheel wells and had some storage there too.

I kept it up pretty well , replacing stuff as it wore out or as I had saved enough.

After about 7 years it got too rusty and I bought another one exactly the same year and model , now I had lots of new parts from the old one and switched them over...then I took the cap off and built a 24" high wall on the truck bed and replaced the cap on top of that !
Now , I could stand up inside !

Then I took the rear door off the cap and built a plywood rear wall with the cap door now vertical.Added 2" of insulation everywhere covered with 1/4"luan and built shelves that fit coolers and other plastic tubs down one side which I covered with plexi for a counter top of sorts , a platform for the bed with compartments under for bigger storage tubs , lived in that one for another 13 years.....

I hope this gives you some ideas how to be comfy in yours.....

Thanks ridgerunner - I was unaware of freecampsites.com. I was pleasantly surprised how many spots were available east of the Mississippi River.

Thanks - Doug
