Bigger is better with evaporative cooling. This is a beastly (for a Van) portable evaporative cooler. it’s a little bit bigger than 2 5 gallon buckets stacked, it puts out upto 1100 CFM (it has 3 speeds. This has a real rigid cooling pad with air intake screen.

It does use 110v but that is what an inverter & batteries or a generator is for.

As of this writing, it’s $150 off making the retail price $180. You can’t build comparible specs with scrap parts for this price! If you want serious evaporative cooling buy this serious evaporative cooler, the savings will pay for the credit card interest.

I just received mine & it’s worth every dollar plus interest. It will go into the bus conversion.

Seriously 'big' cooling but for a larger rv/skoolie looks interesting if you got plenty of water.
Home Depot site shows one about 1/2 size, w/ smaller reservoir, 53 dBA and 0.7 amp draw

Hessaire MC18M
1,300 CFM 2-Speed Portable Evaporative Cooler (Swamp Cooler) for 500 sq. ft.

Amazon has them for $156

Credit card??...What's a credit card, lol. Haven't had one in 20 yrs.

For these swampcoolers, you need to make sure the air intake is vented to the outside. You have to rig some sort of ducting to get the best performance. The Hessaire uses the celdek media which I use in my swampcoolers, its the best media available I been using it for years, and it lasts for 5 years as claimed before needing replacement. One more thing is to make sure the water compartment doesnt slosh around too much, otherwise you have to drain it everytime you move your van.

You vent your swampcooler properly and you will get very good cooling effect, better than any roof vents. If you let any of the interior air get mixed in with the outside air, you will be introducing extra humidity into your van. If you don't vent your swampcooler, it would be worst then just using a fan.

Doesn't the venting importance depend what climate you're in?

Yes yes.

I am dissapointed there isn't a portable swamp cooler with an intake hose like portable A/Cs have. It would be so much better.

This hessaire might serve as the second stage for the two stage evaporative cooling if I can make a intake shroud for it.
