I'm a little surprised this hasn't come up in “Miscellaneous Vehicles,” so a ran a search on the form and didn't see it come up anywhere.

Ultralight Aircraft are small aircraft for a single person that can take off and land on both water or land strips. Last time I checked they do not require a pilots license, though they are regulated by the FAA.

So I wondered if anyone has thought of landing on a remte lake somewhere, setting up camp for a few days to a week, and fly out to get more supplies. You could land near a marina to get fuel and food.

Although I don't believe it's for me because of a disability I have, it seems to be a fairly adventurous way to get away from other people, four-wheeler and even forest rangers.

Of course the downside is if something went wrong you are equally remotely removed from help. But some of this could be circumvented by have a beacon transmitter and some utralights even come with parachutes.

I used to have a Friend that carried a Gyro-copter under his bus conversion to Quartzite Every year and thats what he did was fly in and out...

since 9/11 tho the airspace is a little more restricted as to where you can fly near civilization.

good Idea...we all dream of flying!!!!!

Just wait until Amazon gets their drone fleet going. Then you can paddle to a remote location and receive supplies by drone.

I'm working on my drone taxi cab fleet. We will pick you up and fly you where ever you want within the USA.

Sounds great Zil, like a present day version of the whistle-stop train, sign me up.

slow2day, My wife and I stayed at a campsite in Idaho, we had know idea what we got ourselves into. We ordered dinner at the kitchen tent. Much to our surprise they brought us the steak and potatoes to our tent. Dinner never tasted so good after a hard day of riding motorcycles (don't ride anymore). They could certainly benefit from Amazon's drone business model.

Yeah, I guess many folks up in Alaska depend on air service for a lot. I was fascinated by the life of **** Proenneke who lived in a remote location in AK and would get supplies flown in. With all the high tech stuff today like satellite phone, internet and SPOT devices, it wouldn't be so bad if that kind of isolation appealed to you. Amazon and a bush pilot is all you'd need.

You could have one and live like those guys on Mad Max did out in the remotes somewhere.

We could soon be able to buy strangers across the world a drink that would be delivered to them in person within minutes. Or flowers or candy. Or some spark plugs.

I read a book called Dog Stars that made me think of this.

If your motor vehicle breaks down on you, you coast to the side of the road. If your ultralite breaks down, you plunge from the sky.

Buddy's friend and business partner bwas crippled and brain damaged that way; another made a crash landing on the ex-in-law's farm fields, narrowly missing a herd of future beef...

No thanks...

My weight would be too much for an Ultralight. I actually was interested in one when I was younger, but now..... Nah. I'll keep my size fifteens on the ground. :)

And driving your RV you can get head-on'd by a tractor-trailer with a driver asleep at the wheel, there's risks everywhere, but then that's life, eh.:p Certainly some ultralight designs are safer than others (personally I'd steer clear of the para-glider cuz those chutes are more prone to problems than a fixed-wing), but also if your engine cuts out they do glide as that's inherent in most of their designs. And while I'm as risk-averse as the next guy, you gotta admit flying through the sky like a bird (albeit a big one, ;?) has got some real advantages, like no rush-hour traffic jams to deal with, and OH THE VIEW, man that would never get old, imo.

I like the bottom example, cool look and able to land on either land or water. Too bad they haven't invented a towable flying trailer, lol, that would be the bomb, heheh.
;?D

If you really just want to get away from other people, you can buy a trailer in Florida, pay your lot rent for the year, and not come out for months at a time. You don't have to go find an island.

I already tried that. I just too-much love sitting by New River watching the girls.
