If a van dweller is stealth on a city street where an armed and dangerous person has just committed a homicide, then it is important to know that occurred and be prepared.

Well, my cell phone has a NY area code number, so I frankly don't see how a local 911 system is even going to know I'm in their area to call me when I'm anywhere else in the country.

Suppose that's another reason to have one of those weather radios with the emergency alert system . . .

Made sense to me, so I always have my supplies in a "go-kit"...and although I have never needed the stuff, I have it if I do.

Agreed, same here. Someone mentioned "tin foil hat". I see Natural Disaster, Search and Rescue, Firefighters, CERT, and related organizations along the same lines as EMT and ER training. All highly necessary, and life saving volunteers and professionals.

My thoughts exactly. I've got my weather radio ready to go.

When your phone makes contact with the cell tower, the system is aware of you, and you will fall into the list of people that they will call or text, if necessary. Physical location of a phone is not based on area code anymore.

Many times I have received alerts when traveling in other areas, about a weather event or Amber Alert near where I am at the moment.

Good to know!

That's interesting, and thank you.

But I almost never turn my cell phone on.  I carry it so **I** can make emergency calls, not so other people can bother me.

Oh you are one of THOSE people. :p

I have a friend just like that.

Sure does piss me off when a text goes un-answered for 5 days...then suddenly I get an answer to something I have completely forgotten about!

Haha, I do the same thing!

I am indeed one of THOSE people!  If there is any justice in the multi-verse, Alexander Graham Bell has a nice, warm place close to the fire!

That was my original intention, till people that had other ideas got my number. It then started having a life of it's own.

We had one of those here last year when a guy robbed a drug store at gunpoint and took off into the woods not far from my house. My street was blocked off, and I had to sneak through a neighboring complex to get out to go to the bank. Cops with guns everywhere. Helicopters flying around overhead. It was scary. They wanted everyone to stay inside, but of course, a lot of us just went and stood outside and watched what was going on. We knew the guy couldn't get to us from where he was last seen.

Had one many years ago in my old city -- almost the same scenario. Guy robbed a CVS and was seen running through my neighborhood. That time, I was scared. I had cops all over my street, because he was seen running down the swale behind my house.

It's never fun when crazed people are on the run in your neighborhood. Unfortunately, this fellow committed murder just before running. And I had to go out to deliver a friend to the airport. No way I was going to let someone near and dear miss their flight.

Armed robber a couple months ago...notified people in the area (cell phones) and 6 area schools were on lock-down. Kathleen, use the non-emergency phone number vs. 911.  :shy:

I call that number when I have a non emergency question.

But in this case the recording told us we could call them at 911.

Dispatch answered right away.

What concerned me was the recorded message terminology: "Major incident has occurred."

What in heck is a major incident?

Of course, they would not give me any further info, just stay inside until situation resolved.

Dispatch did say I would receive a call when safe to go out again.

And the system worked. Got 2 calls after the shooter was in custody.

Was able to learn more online when I did a search.

Sorry for the fellow who lost his life, but glad it was NOT a major incident.

Too many situations where a crazed person has gunned down a crowd in public.
