What kind of vehicle or engine would I need to pull a small to medium travel trailer efficiently? Is there any way to modify my '97 Accord to do this, or do I just need to scratch it and get a truck?
Pardon my ignorance. I intend to cure it asap.

What size trailer did you have in mind? Medium trailers to me usually weigh in at around 2000 pds. The most you can pull with an Accord is 1000 pounds. A teardrop trailer weighs less than that, but is much smaller than a medium trailer. The Scamp 13 foot fiberglass trailer starts out at 1200 pounds. This is before you add in the weight of your stuff (clothes, food, laptop, water) which usually adds about 250 pounds to that.

dunno. don't really need much more than bed space and a little room for my dogs to roam and if i have enough headspace, i can maximize it pretty well. I'm becoming more and more convinced that i'm going to have to trade in my car for something with a little more pull power, or maybe just a box van.

I've been looking into this myself and the one thing I've learned is - there's a lot to learn! I don't want to give you any wrong information but I can at least provide a link to Camping Life's Tow Ratings page, which is here:

http://www.campinglife.com/towrating/

This might help you figure out how much weight a particular vehicle can tow. It has a search function; you just plug in the year, make, and model. It will also give you other recommendations, like whether a tow package or special hitch is required, etc.

Now, to figure out how much a particular trailer weighs - I don't have a good way to do that anymore. NADA used to include weights on their value pages (after you picked the trailer year, make, model), but they've redesigned their site and that info is now gone. If I find a similar site I'll post it here.

I hope that helps at least a little.

Meg

There's usually a sticker posted on the bottom front drivers side of the trailer that states the weight of it and how much more it can hold. When it comes to cars and trucks I usually just go to the mfg's website for that info.
