Coming up on three years living full time in my Astro van. Actually this is my second Astro, having sold the passenger van to get a clean cargo van with much more room and 120,000 fewer miles.
During the summer months I use the van in my handyman work in the Boulder, Colorado area. I work like a maniac and living in the van allows me to save the bulk of my income. Come the cold weather, I say goodbye to all that and hit the road. I'm currently in Santa Barbara, CA enjoying the 60F temps and absolutely beautiful surroundings. I stealth in the van for about 3 days at a time and then get a room for one night. I left Boulder in mid-November this year.
I'm not shy about making changes to the van and enjoy posting photos and how-to's, as well as learning from others.
I've been a Registered Nurse for 26 years and a carpenter for over 30 years. Before taking up van life most of my travel, since 1970, has been by motorcycle.
Here's the van in work and play mode.

Oh, if you are still a RN, do you ever do any travelling gigs as a Nurse? that is some serious money for a very short amount of time.

Most of my career has been spent providing hospice care in the home. It's not a very sexy or highly paid branch of health care and I've never seen a travel gig for it. But, it is possible to make some serious money in travel gigs though you will certainly work for it. I'm too old to run around like that anymore.

I spent a few days around SLO but can't remember where I parked. Thanks for the locations. I've been in Santa Barbara for a few weeks and parking is pretty laid back no,w but I'll bet during high season, not so much. In Ventura I found some spots near downtown and under the bridge for the 101. With my kayak on the roof and bicycle on the rack, I'm not very stealthy but local police have their hands full with sizable homeless populations that seem to always be involved in some kind of ruckus.
