My standard mode of operation is to get to an area I want to stay in and then scout for a campsite in my towed.  I have a GPS that has TOPO maps added to it that show terrain and service roads among other things, and that keeps track of where I've driven, breadcrumb tracking mode.

I drive the towed in looking at the roads and then design a trail to the site I want to use from the bread crumb trails to get my much more painful to drive in TransVan.

After camp is setup the TOPO maps have huge amounts of information about the local area and the bread crumb feature always gets me home, not always the fastest, but at least sure how to get back.

On my bike, I use a handheld GPS, that does not have minor roads, trails or topo. But it does have bread crumbs. And no worries of pesky birds eating them! :)
As long as I can find my way back I am okay. And I mark POI's as I find them.

Hi Corky, what GPS unit do you have? Was there any others that had the same or more features that you were thinking about? Thnx!

I have an old Garmin Nuvu 760.  Most of the better Garmins have trip log feature and TOPO's come from GPSFILEDEPOT.COM.

The NUVI is preferred by many motorcyclists too. I just can't justify that kind of cost.
One thing the dual sport riders like to do is to take the track info from their NUVI and overlay it onto a Google Map. They can plot a course for later, add in notations, mark POI's, etc. Then they can print the map and pass it out to their buddies for a ride.
I really do need to upgrade to something similar. Today's handhelds are becoming corrupted with far too much 'geocaching' stuff, it is really degrading their usefulness to a rider/driver.

I see that the second and third urls are too long to work. You will have to add the last bracket after you get the error message. }
Sorry.

The negative (one star) comments on the 66LMT put me off. Also, I need a unit that is rain-proof. So I am still looking and researching.
