just to clarify. pre 1982 gm diesels were indeed a gas motor(oldsmobile) converted to diesel lots of problems and not reliable. in 1982 gm switched to the 6.2 which is a Detroit diesel then in the early 90's went to a 6.5 also a detriot diesel. these are basically the same engines ad many parts are interchangeable. both of these engines were used in hummers and military blazers/pickups. they were available on many civilian gm vehicles. although not a power house engine they do get good fuel economy. with proper maintenance will last way beyond 160,000 miles.

Thanks for your input highdesertranger, that backs up what I have been told about that engine, although I'd like to get more like 500,000 plus miles with it? I was hoping that would be reasonable?

buddy of mine just got a heck of a deal on a clean low miles, dually service body with the 6.5. The fuel pump quit shortly after, and it wasn't a cheap repair. As an excavator, he runs a whole fleet of different diesels, and was a little shocked at how gutless this one seemed to be. He stopped at a local business that had a fleet of 6.5 powered minibuses, back in the day. He asked the mechanic if he though that there was an issue, or if they really are that limp feeling compared to more modern stuff? The guy took it for a test run and said it was just fine. He then asked what he could do to hot rod it a bit? The mechanic said, "we spent a lot of time looking for ways to get them to wake up a bit, and finally found the cure. We traded them in" LOL. Seriously though, great looking truck, and once you spend some time on the right forums and learn your way around the motor, it will serve you well. Nice buy!
