I have 3 of these generators, 2 gray and 1 bluetooth. All three of them had the surging dying issue when they reached about 20 hrs of run time. They would start and run fine for about 20-30 minutes and start surging and finally die. Sounded like they were running out of fuel. I ran them with the loose fuel cap and that didn't fix it. Finally i moved the run/choke know toward choke to give it a little more gas and that done it for all three of them. So now when i start them i leave them choked until they start sputtering, maybe 15 seconds and then slowly turn the knob to run. As soon as the engine quits sputtering i stop moving the knob although it is not fully in the run position, usually about half way between run and choke. Hopefully this helps.
Can you over fill it? If so could that cause this to happen.
