Per the Galveston Daily News, Galveston County has now closed the 27 miles of beaches on Bolivar Peninsula effective immediately. All the beaches in the City of Galveston and in the unincorporated areas of Galveston Island have been closed for a couple of weeks, but the beaches on Bolivar, which are much more remote and basically accessible only by taking the ferry across the Houston Ship Channel, had remained open until today.

So as of this writing the only available beaches are the four or five miles of beach on the Texas City Dike, and these are open only on Monday through Friday - closed weekends.

Update : At the direction of Governor Greg Abbott, all Texas beaches will reopen tomorrow , May 1, 2020.

By issuing this executive order, Gov. Abbott is overruling the directions of those county and city governments which have closed or restricted the use of the beaches within their jurisdictions during the crisis. This is a lawful move by the governor and it is another milestone in the long-standing power struggle between the state and local governments.

This is good news for boondockers, however, as there is much free camping to be had, some requiring varying degrees of stealth, along the hundreds of miles of beaches on the Gulf of Mexico.

Beaches back in bidness.
