Hello everyone,

My brother lives in ohio by the michigan border.

he's looking for a free camping location that he can go to and camp with his kids and get away for a while.

I tried looking but i was not able to find anything for him and he's only got a tiny cell phone so he really can't surf the web looking.

thanks for your help

I believe the power company has large tracts of land that they allow camping on but that was years ago and they may have required a yearly pass. Several nice state parks but all with fees. You might get to stay free overnight at some of the public boat launches.

Be careful parking at boat launches in Michigan. My son-in-law got a $250 ticket for parking at a boat area during salmon season a few years back. The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) which the state parks fall under is quite strict. I would use the National Forests, county parks, just not state parks and launches.

Free camping in the eastern US is a little hard to find. Check this website - https://www.campendium.com/

Use the category and price filters to eliminate anything but free or very inexpensive camping spots.

We've camped at the American Electric Power campgrounds. They're very nice but a good distance from your brother's house. https://www.aep.com/recreation/areas/recreationland

The Heron Manistee National Forest  https://www.fs.usda.gov/hmnf https://www.fs.usda.gov/hmnf  looks like it might be good too and it may be a little closer.

Most of the free camping in Ohio is in the SE area. AEP recreation land, wayne national forest.
