my search is continuing and i've come across some decent battery deals locally but they are UPS batteries. they seem like normal AGM batteries but their application is always for odd things like server backups. so i wonder if they are fine as a home battery in the van. here's one i'm looking at - http://www.powerfactorinc.com/Batteries/ups12-210mr.htm

thankyou for any feed back.

While the use case on UPS batteries is very different than most RV use, they frequently use the same style of batteries.
ended up buying 2 Dynasty UPS12-210MR batteries. they're rated at 53Ahs each and are unused. paid 50$ each for them so feel good with small starting investment. still need to get an inverter and battery selector. i was surprised how expensive battery selectors were on my initial search, around 40$. i'm hoping to find the inverter and selector on craigslist or ebay. i've been having good luck so far.
