Arizona gave you a pretty astounding light show for your first night here!!

The El Nino had made it unusually cold and windy, but we get knock-your-socks-off sunsets on a regular basis!

It did! Thanks. Hope I didn't disturb you dropping by. The cold isn't bad yet as long as I don't have to worry about my water freezing...

This is my camp in Ehrenberg:

LOL--  am I the only one that did a double-take and wondered how the heck Bob managed a cargo trailer with a slide out???
"Oh, that's his side door..."   laughed at myself for that one.

so bummed I can't make it this year.

Went for a walk. Couple neat things around Ehrenberg if anyone's interested.

Geological marker.

Yep, it's the desert.

On three different occasions, I startled deer along my walk. The first was a group of five including a fawn. The next was larger, perhaps twelve or so. The last was only two. Here are some of them peering at me from atop their retreat point along a ridge.

And then I found an area with... holes.

Looking in.

This one seems to travel horizontally... ? I didn't elect to investigate.

Also in the area were many smaller holes, clearly drilled or cut into the rock, with a depth of about a foot. Prospecting test holes? Tent anchor points? Dunno. The area appears to me to be volcanic rock or such.

Then I climbed to the top of this hill...

...and looked out in the direction of camp for a bit of perspective.

Unfortunately the sun was setting at that point, so I jogged most of the way back in twilight and made it to the van after dark. I don't recommend that.

I call it a good use of an afternoon either way!

Was this area under an ocean back in the day? I'm pretty sure I saw some layered sediment in some fallen away hillsides, but that may just be my imagination.

Hi to everybody in Ehrenburg.
I was there several weeks ago. I wish I was still there. Love all of you awesome folks that I had the pleasure to meet.
I'm home in Oregon with my little Beagle that found me in Florida. Getting ready to start the heartworm treatments.
Seeing all the pics made me start planning to be there next Fall.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

I must have been driving right in front of you. What did you think of The Ocala National Forest? Did you swim in the Salt Springs? Wish I was still in Ehrenburg.

Your holes are of course old mines. The shoring that existed has probably dry-rotted. The small ones could be ventalation shafts filled in.

A wonderful little gathering was pulled together for a Christmas eve celebration. There was lots of food and cheer. New frends met and old friends gathered. It was a perfect day. I think close to 25 or 30 desert dwellers showed up. A few more people showed up for the first time. That worked out well, they were able to meet people all in one spot to gather information.

Thaks to the tribe for making this such a cherished day.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I'm sure that's true!

But with the El Nino it's been a cold winter, hanging around the low 30s many nights. You'll want a heater and warm clothes and bedding.

See you soon!
Bob

I've been watching the weather for Ehrenberg, AZ and find that it is comparable to the weather that Sacramento has been having.   To be honest I expected warmer temps for both day and night.

How does this El Niño weather differ from what is normal for that area?

Seems that Brownsville, TX has great winter weather.     80+ degrees days and 65-70 degrees at night.

I haven't been to Brownsville in years! Sounds like it might be time for a return visit!!!

If you're really curious about the weather for a place & a time, it's history can give you a ball park guess. I usually go to Weatherbase to see how a place averages out.... http://www.weatherbase.com/

Wow. What a great site. I just played with the "vacation finder" with the parameters of nights not below 40 and in the U.S. (then in AZ). Much of the Quartzsite area looks to usually not be below 43 at night (average).

Here's a link to the chart it made if the link holds:

I fled Ehrenberg to Yuma this weekend. It's slightly warmer and slightly less windy here. My van was filling up with a dusting of sand in those hardest winds. I'll be back for the RTR, if not before (and, with any luck, bearing tequila and a new tooth from Algodones).

Corpus Christi has been in the 70's, if you don't want to drive all the way down to Brownsville.
