I use this http://m.rei.com/product/876178/reliance-luggable-loo-seat-and-cover with a standard 5 gallon bucket.

I put a half inch or so of peat moss in the bottom of the bucket and have a cup of peat moss ready to cover. The peat moss makes the whole thing quite neat. Then I bury away from camp.

I burn toilet paper in a soup can with holes punched in it.

Pee at night goes in a jug with the aid of a freshette. (It's like a sheewee).

In the day with privacy pee goes on a deserving plant.

I must say that the freshette has dramatically improved my experience of nighttime peeing.

I never figured out how to make a girl device (freshette, shewee, gijane) actually work with out a major mess....I'm back to PPs (porta pottys)

Haven't tried those girly devices. Recently when trying out my van by camping with friends to see what I still needed, I used a simple funnel into a container. A quick spray of vinegar & water solution to rinse the funnel & back in the zip lock it went. No issues for me and no mess.

Last year I had 2 separate surgeries to treat kidney stones. With each one I needed to strain my urine to save the stones. Hospital gave me a contraption that was basically a plastic wide ended funnel with a screen. Threw that away once I was done but inspired the funnel idea for late night nature's call when in the van.

who would have expected that a thread that started by asking people what they do with their shit, could actually go down hill from there?

anyhow thanks ladies, i'm sure my wife will benefit from the last few posts.

I find the freshette device works great. And if I'm wearing shorts or convertible pants, I can use it without even pulling my pants down. And there are plastic bags that go with it that have a little spout that fits right over the device tubing. Very handy in the tent when you don't want to go outside.

Sorry for the TMI but let's be real for a sec. We're not 8 year olds giggling about our body fluids. Having an honest conversation about how best to deal with any and all waste products in the leave no trace philosophy is just being a good steward of the natural beauty we want to be close to.

My understanding is that this is a common question for newbies, especially women. If your wife is interested, I believe there is a thread in the women's only forum about these girly devices. It just happen to come up in a general post also.
