do you ever get the feeling someone is spying on you?

There is a serious difference between spying and surveillance:
 - spying is collecting data on a target, be it a person or process or activity.  (I'm collecting information on wabbit's movements).

 - surveillance is looking for particular activities in an area.  (I'm looking at activity in a lot that wabbit happens to be parked in).

I was just pointing out that in order for someone to spy on you, they are already interested in you....

I disagree(about it not splitting hairs).

By your definitions, what do you call the tracking of users online?

What is it called when devices listen in to what's going on around it?

Is that spying or surveillance or something else?

I don't know about others, but my experience is that we are closer to a dystopian society rather than a utopian one. At least according to the definitions. I have no idea how much bandwidth it would take to target\monitor 360 million people. I am happy to hear there's not enough bandwidth to do that. Someone should tell China it's not possible(that good natured sass, not condescending crap).

Wouldn't it just be easier to say that there is no such thing as privacy any more ?

Between Google and Facebook there is nearly nothing about you that isn't known to them.

Business people use these sources to evaluate areas to see if they are worth their time to  even
try to do business there.  In the past that was mostly about guess work.  With a few key strokes
today they can have all the demographic information by just typing in your zip code.  In Facebook Business,
They can set up a target area and set the radius from 5 miles to 10 to what distance to see how many
people would be qualified consumers of what ever good or service they are trying to sell.

No drones or satellites needed.  We give this info freely to these databases daily with our movements on the internet and Cell traffic & travels ah la ping ping ping.  Big brother knows where you are, where you've been, and likely where you will be going next with his software programs.

- surveillance is looking for particular activities in an area.  They are harvesting any interesting information they can get from anyone.

You know all those adds that pop up after you just searched on something?  You are being spied upon.

Alexa listens to everything within its range.  I don't know what it does with this.  It does a lot of communication with something on the internet.

Is that spying or surveillance or something else?

A friend who is blind has Alexa.  It is a godsend for him.  I won't have something that is always listening and communicating with a giga-corporation database.

I have no control over what data the NSA has collected on me.
I still have a little bit over corporate data harvesting.

I'll ask the question more directly: Why should they be interested in you?
They see a bunch of cars and a travel trailer in a parking lot.  Any reason they should be interested in your car and trailer?  Otherwise you're just background noise.

We're on candid camera all the time: almost all stores have security cameras in and outside, even lower middle class neighborhoods and a lot of apartment buildings have outside cameras, some public parks and buildings have cameras.  I have a dash camera, smart phone, could have a wearable camera, a friend has a trail camera looking at his campsite.

My point is that unless someone has a reason to notice you, you're just one of millions of cars and trailers they photograph in a day.  Spying implies an active interest.

Spaceman....you are turning a silly joke about that feeling that someone is watching you into something even sillier yet.

alexa
cell phone
home alarms
gps
fitbit
and so much more

all that crap I hate

don't own cell phone, never buy extra gadgets and I AM ONE who doesn't want it. just have 0 desire to be connected in any way OTHER than my ancient laptop :) when it dies I might not buy another but going on 15 yrs old now so I do hope I get another 5 out of it! Slow as molasses sometimes but it works still and everyone says, OMG get new tech but I say it works so why bother

Who is sillier: one who takes a serious topic as a joke or those who try to have an intelligent conversation about it?

I am not paranoid about being "seen" and if someone is looking, are they ever going to be bored. This topic borders on being paranoid.

Why of course it is the concept of having an intelligent conversation about a joke!  Remember that people make jokes about serious topics all the time. If not there would be no humor which is of course an essential for getting through tough times and good times too.

I have actually spotted our motorhome twice now on google maps in the satellite view... they don't refresh too often (maybe once a year), so it's highly unlikely but certainly possible to spot your rig from space! ;)

I went to look to see if I could see my rig from space. Darn accurate and recent. The little blue arrow points right to my rig. It’s this years photo as I see the tiny garden tilled next to the barn.

On looking closer it had to be either early last year or before. I’m old and confused.

nice place Cammalu. if you had gold around, you might have a hard time getting rid of me. LOL. highdesertranger

There are approximately 2,000 functional satellites at the present time. Of course they are not all doing the same types of functional tasks such as the ones doing satellite TV , phones and GPS.

It does not really bother me, "they" have no real interest in me as a person other than some generalized demographic clumping of points of data. I plan to go right on boring to death anyone who even thinks about spending their time watching me.

/\ Where did you get that 2000 satellites number?

May 25, 2019 · There are approximately 3,000 satellites operating in Earth orbit, according to the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA ), out of roughly 8,000 man-made objects in total.

for me I simply googled how many sats in orbit and I got this :) :)

/\I did the same thing and got 4994(I luv palindromes!).

HUH, well we are both right cause anything googled on the internet is always the truth HAHA
