By this, I am talking about food and beverages. If it is only available in one area, like the UK, or New York, and you traveling to, oh Seattle, do you buy an extra case? I am liking Mountain Dew Pitch Black, but aside from Amazon, I am only able to find it when I visit Montana every year. I am 16 so I don't quite have a van or license yet (considering it is winter), and would like to figure this out ahead of time.

Yes, I do!

There's a Canadian chain of restaurants that have a wonderful (to me anyways.. :) ) sauce for on their rotisserie chicken. I grabbed 6 of the packets of sauce mix before I left for the winter so that I could continue to have it when I buy cooked chicken over the winter.

But buying a half dozen small packets of sauce mix is a whole lot less space needed than cases of beverages.

You're going to find that even if you're very proficient at packing and have allowed a lot of storage space in your design plan that there is only so much you can carry.

Yeah, if something is hard to find. In my case, it's Zone Perfect Double Dark Chocolate nutrition bars.

Very true! I am not on the road yet, so I am able to store more stuff (I live in a basement for God's Sakes). But, when I do hit the road, I will truly be limited by storage capacity. I have given up the idea of a tow behind trailer, and I too have several restraunts that have amazing sauces that I cannot find anywhere else, and when I do visit them (North Dakota), I typically pick up some extras.

I used to do that a lot when I had my big class A .
Now ,with smaller rig I stick with "hoarding " just smaller items (like those sauce packets).

Plus I've found that there are lots of "local only" products from new places I visit that I'll want to try out and maybe carry extras of, so I'd say yes and no ! ;)

There is a pasta sauce recipe that has been in my family in America for 110 years.  No telling how long it was in Sicily.

When I get together with my Daughters, we cook up another 5 gallon batch.  The sauce is handed down by watching, smelling, and tasting.     I will be taking 10 pints on the road with me this time.

:p

There is also a little place in The Napa Valley, The St Helena Olive Oil Company.  The cheeses!  It is hard to find, way off the beaten path, but worth fighting the insane traffic.  I stock up when I can.

@GotSmart
I think that sauce looks delicious  .

Since I am not on the road, my observations may not matter. I , however, imagine that many people have region specific foods they enjoy. I would think that space concerns remain an important consideration for these people because the living quarters often limit the amount of food a person can store.

Their olive oil is killer, cheese you may not find anywhere else. Store was dark and earthy, neat place!

I used to ride my bicycle there in the early 70's for an outing.  A baguette, A stick if pepperoni, some cheese and a soda~~~.  Later in the 70's I would be partying with one of the owners kids, and we ~~~ Never mind.

There is a parallel to a plot thread in a popular movie made by another Valley resident that is unspoken~~~ Capice?  ;)

The cash register is still a roll top desk.  No pastic, local checks only.  Security is a huge single barrel shotgun.  Accounting is scribbles on wrapping paper.  5th generation already.  Free lemons from the hedge out front.

I miss that place!

It depends on shelf life, weight, and bulk. My refrigerator and freezer space are limited. Some things are regional in pricing, so are worth stocking up on when cheap.

Did George Lucas have anything to do with it?

I am usually a long was from stores, so yes I like to stock up. right now I can easily go 2+ weeks. I am hoping to stretch that to a month, the key component to that will be one more 12v refer to use as a freezer. also a water purifier and larger water tanks. highdesertranger
