That's exactly what I have been doing. TX license and tags, PO box in San Diego where I spend most of my time. I was able to get the PO box when I still had a CA driver's license.

I believe the one month stay is regarding getting a SD CCW permit. Vehicle registration/driver's license requires 1 night stay in a motel or campground and receipt verifying the stay.

That would be very nice, thank you!

I thought it was easy to become a SD resident? That doesn't sound easy!

It is MUCH easier to become a Nevada resident!! And cheaper too, although that would depend on the cost of your vehicle. Nevada has no taxes and most of the state has no inspections or emissions tests (Reno and Vegas do).

If you become a NV resident by age 60, at 65 you can stay in all state campgrounds for free after buying a $30 yearly permit. That's cheaper than New Mexico! But there are less Parks.

I've been with my mail forwarder in Pahrump NV for 6 years. Nobody is better!!! I'm sure yours are as good, they aren't better! She will deposit checks in by bank account at BofA! It was $100 a year for 5 years, this year she raised it to $120 a year. Find her here:

Here is the best reason to become a NV resident: it's NOT 1000 miles out of your way every 5 years!!! I spend 2/3 of my year within a few hundred miles of NV. In the winter at Quartzsite, I'm 2 hours away from the nearest NV DMV! It's closer than Phoenix! That's why I'm a NV resident!

That is good to know, thank you. I saved it for future reference.
I've never been out west except LA, and that just at the airport on my way to Australia, and them on the way back.
A state with no income tax would be great, and a state I don't have to drive back for dmv inspections and such even better.

As I have said before, you are NOT obligated to answer any questions from the officer. The less you say in this matter the better. Yes they may have suspicions, but it is still 100% legal and NOTHING they can do about it. If they ask, your best answer may either be silence or "because it is legal". Any further explanation may end up getting you in further trouble...

VT, I'm sure you are technically correct. What you say matches advice from Boston Tea Party and other sources I trust.

But I'm also pretty sure that having non-matching paperwork AND electing to remain silent and not give them any explanation will get you detained on the side of the road until they can bring up a drug sniffing dog unit.

Personally, I think it's a whole lot easier to have all your paperwork match so that a routine traffic stop remains just that - routine.

A lot less stress that way, and at my age, I've already had all of the stress I want. Of course, that's just me. YMMV.

That sounds a lot more convenient since I'll be spending most of my time in AZ and surrounding states. I'd have to get a NV CCW since NV doesn't recognize non FL resident permits, which I got in '04 while a resident of MO.

On the other hand, years ago I knew a guy who lost his drivers license for drunk driving. Somehow - not sure how - he managed to get a drivers license from the state next door. While still living, working, and driving in the first state.

California caught onto that scheme many years ago. In CA they suspend you "privilege to drive" as well as the actual license. Now you can't drive in CA while your privilege is suspended regardless of any license you may have, and while out of state your status of your CA drivers license is invalid.

I could see a benefit of having more than 1 drivers license.

Im with Bob on this one.........finding a state that is convenient and you frequent at least a couple times a year is the answer

on the east coast most are Fla. & NH.....south east and southern midwest Tx. & fla.......mid west SD & Tx.........west coast NV...Tx.....SD.

it would be rather cumbersome to have to travel to a state just to get my vehicle registered and Lic. updated.....not to mention the fuel & expenses wasted just to save a few bucks.....you dont save anything that way.

I call NH home.....I pass thru it @ least 4 times a year....its taxes are not bad on my investments and vehicles and has enough NP to boondock there for a month or 2 every year so it pans out....my Doctors are there because I pass thru enough to schedule and an address in a campground and a PO box is enough for the state
