Am 50 now. Can not retire for eight years. Age 62 and SSI seems so far away. Had explained in another thread that if you save around $300,000 (sell your house, whatever you have in 401K etc) you can retire as an individual today. Just have to live off of $15,000 interest per year. If you have a spouse you might need to double that.

Man I must be real frugal!! My rent is 700 bucks a month. My bills total.....400 bucks a month and as of next month will be cut in half. I don't make big bucks and do not own a car or have a 401k. Yet most months (after food and stuff)I can save about 600 bucks. Minus any emergencies I have. I have pets (one left) it cost me around 300 bucks just to get to the emergency room and have the doc put my sweet baby to sleep. UGH!! He had a stroke and I wasn't waiting until Monday to save about 200 bucks. I ride my bike everywhere, brown bag it. Don't go to movies unless they are free(outdoor park ones) I go anywhere that is free for fun. Festivals(you don't need money to go to one) Libraries(they free stuff there too) and etc. I'm going to be rich if when I live in the van LOL Not really but quite comfy though!

My uncle and aunt retired early while in their late 40s/early 50s. They saved every penny and live a very frugal lifestyle. My uncle is jewish and aunt chinese. They were both accountants and worked for some very heavy hitters in the finance business, so they made a lot of pennies. A lot. I typed this all out and just realized this is probably of no help. Sorry about that.
Big help more than you know. I dont make the big bucks as I said but Mom and Dad were poor folks and I learned to live real frugal.

I can take my ssi middle of next year, have disabled vet status and will continue working, along with wife as self-employed folks too. Hopefully we can take more vacation time in next few years. Darrell. PS: I have considered working part-time for a store, etc but our business-time takes all my/our energy to succeed.
