Has anyone ever tried the DeWalt inverters or those by other power-tool companies?

On their website, it says you can use them with a 12volt adapter in your/car/truck. I'm wondering if you can also charge them with the alternator while you are driving?

I have a rounded, high top roof, so I don't think I'm going to put solar on there. But I was looking for a cheap, inexpensive way to charge my laptop computer, and I was wondering if any of you have eve tried the inverter by DeWalt, etc...

The 1000 watt inverteer is $149.

The 140w Dewalt inverter has no batteries. It has to be plugged into you vehicle to work.

while 12v adaptors are the way to go, relying of your alternator for your sole means of charging is a poor choice. What do you want to run off of electricity. You mentioned laptop what about lights, cell phone, radio, fan, refrigerator or anything else? Are you ever going to be parked for a day or two? Are you going to have a house battery? Bob just released a video on the Ryobi inverter that uses the batteries of its cordless tools. But, of course, to use the batteries you need a way to charge them. There's a charger that plugs into the vehicle's outlet, which means using the alternator to run the charger to charge the tool batteries so you can use the tool batteries to charge your phone, laptop or whatever. That's a lot of expensive middle steps compared to just using the proper USB adapter/transformer directly in the vehicle outlet.

Inverters use extra power. Why convert 12-volts to 120 volts and then back down to 12-volts again. It's very wasteful in my thinking. I use a 12-volt cord to fit my laptop.

No conversion of energy is 100%. so the more conversion the more losses. Can't get around it. Highdesertranger

At this time, I am not having any of theses things. I willl probably just put a cooler in my van for now. I eat mostly fruits and veggies anyway.

I still have a job at this time (for now....) so until I am doing more than weekend trips, I am just going to run most of what I have on AA batteries (lights, etc..) I found a bunch of really cool lights that run on 2AA batteries. I'd rather use batteries at this time. Later on, I might put in a house battery.

I have found a few things that don't have a 12v charger.
