I have yet to be 100% on taking this path as of yet. As I am ironing out things to make sure it's a success. But as of right now, my current living situation is in a veteran's housing program until Feb 2014. It allows me to save up and get back on my feet, thus I don't really pay much for rent (less than $100), I'm grateful for what their program allows me to do.

With that, I'm finishing up my degree (literally only have 6 classes left) but I've gotten back into playing poker again, and improving my game. I play online and make decent cash at it. I'm wondering how long can a desktop pc run in a camper (is it possible?) I've never owned one and you guys probably know the answer.

I wouldn't mind living in a camper van for a year to see how it is, save money, play poker online for my money and go from there.

Just this mid Jan up until now, I've grinded out a gross profit of $4312.00 playing online, and only see it getting better as I improve. I've been at since 2005:

http://www.pocketfives.com/profiles/shysti/

Opinions?

you could run a desktop computer with an Inverter, connected to a set of batteries. But you will almost certainly be better off running from a laptop. It will generally be more power efficient, and use less electricity than a desktop computer ever would. Plus, for a laptop, you can get a 12V adapter for it , and then you wouldn't need the inverter, and save yourself up to 30% of your electricity.

So, a Laptop is a much better deal.. Plus they are physically a LOT smaller, so you can put more stuff in your van!

Regardless, I wish you lots of successes!

With Love,
Tara

Thanks for the info Tara, the thing with a laptop though as far as my playing poker is, it can only fit a certain amount of tables at a time on the screen. I guess I could purchase a laptop with a huge screen real estate. How about solar panels on the van, would that compensate much for power usage? Thanks in advance.

You can find 17" screen laptops, if you are going to have a TV anyways, you can output to a TV from your laptop.

Well, no matter what you do, you will have to find a way to generate electricity, the less that you use, the less you have to generate. solar is definitely a great option for generating electricity, but it's not like a magic bullet, that instantly gives you all the electricity you need.

With love,
Tara

Ah, good to know, thanks for the prompt response and information Much appreciated.

Id say get a decent laptop with hdmi output and then get a nice LED backlit LCD tv to go with it (low power consumption). I picked up a 20 some inch for 50$ from a guy heading to the pawn shop (who would probably give him 20 for it) But they aren't that expensive online.

I would definitely factor in a safety net for income before relying on poker, which can obviously be volatile.

Thanks for the info, I'm not too worried about living off poker, I've done it before for several years.

Have you looked at the MacMini sort of a pc/lap combo and go with a 12 volt tv/dvd Voila.

Go for the laptop and, if you need more 'real estate', get an lcd monitor. There are even ones that run off usb and plain ol' Intel HD graphics can run an extended desktop. ..Willy.

been working on computers since the early 80's as a kid.

all of these are good suggestions

i am not enamored with the laptop/notebook format for frequent use but that is my own personal preference. they are very power efficient which is important for us.

i have an LED LCD which barely draws any power and i use a mini-itx format computer. so for those unfamiliar with that terminology, its basically a tradition box computer but uses a very small motherboard allowing for a very small size. its smaller than a toaster oven.

i use an intel ivy bridge i5 chip and a dedicated video card. an AMD 7850. i like having the graphics horsepower as i game, use sketchup, take photos and use photo editing software, and watch ALL of my entertainment on it. somethings are dependant upon the CPU, which the i5 handles effortlessly and is pretty efficient. other things depend upon the GPU, the AMD 7850 is equally adept.

i like having the ability to customize and modify it, as well as the muscle. not everyone needs it of course but i am rarely, if ever, confronted with a performance issue.

according to my kill-a-watt, the highest amp usage ive seen with this system, both monitor and computer is 1.2. that was either while gaming (oblivion) or watching movies or something.

while i am currently using mostly AC, i accounted for this usage via inverter when sizing my battery bank and charging methods.

perhaps i will do a more detailed write up elsewhere if anyone is interested.

by the way, i use 3 hard drives. one for the OS and programs (250GB), and two for file storage 2TB each for a total of 4TB. switching to an SSD (which is a solid state HD much like flash memory) for the OS and program drive will lower the power consumption even more.

i do have an IBM laptop that i rescued out of an electronics recycling bin and i do use it on occasion but for every day use, i just like the power of a desktop...laptops make me feel crowded too, and while you can output to a bigger monitor and use separate keyboard and mouse...i still rather have the desktop.

one recommendation. logitech keyboards and mice with their unifying receiver technology. all you need is one tiny little USB transmitter and all of their equipment with the unifying logo works....so when i do switch to my laptop when im sitting outside, i can still use the mouse and keyboard if i wish as i have a transmitter on the laptop too. (each device you buy comes with one...so i wound up with 3 and keep them permanently attached to whatever computer i have).

Ummmm...I guess I'm the only one here who doesn't understand Greek. ;-)

send me a pm with any questions...id be happy to assist or explain...i teach lots of my customers.

cygvan: Have you thought about using something like http://www.mini-box.com/picoPSU-160-XT on a van computer? It seems like it would eliminate the inverter losses and reduce the PSU losses. To me, boosting 12VDC up to 120VAC just to drop it back to 12VDC just seems stupid.

@need....thanks for the reply...

oh yeah i have a number of times...i love the form factor for those things. in fact the whole nano and pico formats are really cool. ive seen some other power supply boards that go up to 250watts and they have ATX enclosures for them making a DC to DC computer power supply which is great.

my system tends to draw less than 150 watts so the one you showed me would work well.

ive been contemplating a small raspberry pi system to run android (not sure if possible) and monitor all kinds of sensors and play mp3 and do nav....id go with a pico supply for that and get the benefit of the keystart feature.

reason for the traditional atx supply, for about 95% of the time since 12/2011 until at least 4/2014 my source will be AC...i never operated my inverter so i mothballed it for now...especially since i was considering a different one. i also like the fact that the atx supply i have has a large 120mm fan which helps move air. important since everything is in a tight space.

Hey Dreighen,

I played poker for a living for 5 years while in Las Vegas. I'm not a great player but managed to beat the 1-2 n/l games for about 9 bucks an hour and have pretty good results in pokerstars multi tables(Terrible results in online cash games). I'm going back to Vegas soon, this time in my van. If pokerstars ever comes back to the US I will be playing on 2 monitors(used to play 8-12 tourneys at a time). I'm sure there is a way to do it, just gonna go trial and error. By the way, how's Blackchip with deposits/withdrawals?
