I am hoping to pick one up myself for backpacking at some point.

There have been several discussions on CPAP use. Search should bring them up.

I spoke with my supplier, and all I have to do is get the conversion cord and it is set up for the 12v use.

Cpap.com sells a power pack that works with most machines. They also have a calculator that will tell you how long your machine will run on it.
