I'm sure others have already done this, so I'm probably late to the party. After killing my last underpowered auxillary battery from overload, my (late) new year's resolution is to save my new auxillary battery replacement. I hope to only use the new auxillary battery for only items that absolutely require it, such as for my fridge, bass subwoofer, Sony PS3 Playstation and 19" Toshiba flatscreen television, plus an overhead ceiling DVD/TV player. These larger electronics require greater power that only an auxillary battery/inverter can provide, verus 12 volt/USB power.

I will be using all these portable electronic devices that can run simply on 12 volt power and/or USB power:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037KLRC0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; Sony makes quality stuff, and I've had many Sony products over the years. This is literally the 4th Blueray device in my vehicle, I'm probably going overboard now.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 with WiFi, Pen & Digitizer (Windows 8 PC tablet)
This is a huge step in shifting from an AC wall charger to 12 volt/USB powered recharging for this full Windows 8 computer tablet. All my previous laptops always required AC wall charging and had a brick as part of the charging cord. Because this Lenova Windows 8 tablet is Atom powered, it will have around 8 hours of battery life, and can be recharged through a cigaratte lighter adapter, very cool. If I need "real" (as in more powerful) computing power, I can still use my Windows laptops instead of this tablet.

Lenovo A2109 9” screen Android tablet
I also have this tablet by Lenovo. Why? Because this tablet uses the ever popular micro-USB cord for recharging, which is the same cord used for my smartphone and many other electronic devices. I like this Android tablet with a larger 9" screen for scrolling through pages of websites and its long battery life. Plus it has an HDMI outlet too for mirroring movies to a larger screen TV if I want to do so.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android smartphone
I love this large quad core processor Android phone, it has a big 5.5" screen, and is quite responsive and powerful and is almost a small tablet with a pen stylus for writing and drawing. I also use this smartphone for wireless tethering to provide internet access for my tablets and laptops via the Android Foxfi and PdaNet+ apps. Using Google Navigation GPS for driving with this phone is fantastic! To top it off, a simple micro-USB cord is used for recharging this device, which I can plug through a 12 volt adapter.

Although one end of the proprietary charging cord is a 30 pin connection, the other end is USB which can simply connect to my 12 volt USB adapter. I like using this as my compact tablet versus my larger screen tablet. This tablet also has the same super-amoled screen as my smartphone, so watching movies is super nice. Plus this particular tablet is only offered through Verizon because it can accomodate a Verizon 4G sim card for fast LTE internet speed (at extra cost of course). I choose to use this tablet on wifi only either at home or via my smartphone wireless tethering. This tablet also has an HDMI outlet via a special adapter.

Jawbone Jambox (small) Wireless Bluetooth Speaker
I like this small portable Bluetooth Speaker which even has pretty decent bass given its small size. Instead of turning on my 10" bass subwoofer which requires power from my auxillary batter and inverter, I simply turn on this portable speaker to stream music from my phone as well as from my laptop computer. This speaker is powered by the ever common micro-USB cord.

AUVIO Bluetooth Portable Speaker
I also have this small portable Bluetooth Speaker as well, which I got for a low price on sale at a local Radio Shack store. I almost like this speaker better than the Jawbone Jambox because this Auvio speaker has an Advance and Previous button for choosing your music. Even my more expensive (small) Jambox speaker doesn't have an Advance and Previous button for music selection. Only small drawback is that the bass on this Auvio speaker isn't quite as nice compared to the small Jawbone Jambox speaker.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx smartphone

I don't use this phone anymore, as I now have my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone. So instead of selling or retiring this Droid Razr phone, I'm essentially using it as an iPod for wirelessly streaming music to my Bluetooth speakers. I have a large micro-SD card inside the phone filled with music, plus a bunch of burned movies too. This phone is actually BETTER than an Apple iPod because the phone has Bluetooth capability which means it can pair wirelessly to a Bluetooth speaker for streaming audio/music. Plus the best part is that battery life on this phone is very long lasting, and can be recharged by a simple micro-USB cord.

<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; Another useful feature is that the battery can be recharged while simultaneously charging another device (not all batteries can do this). I keep this battery velcro taped to my dashboard, which is plugged into a 12 volt adapter, plus has 2 extra USB cords coming out of the battery for charging other devices when needed.

http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-P400...amp;sr=1-4&keywords=motorola+battery+pack

Motorola P4000 Universal Portable Power Pack
I also like this external portable battery pack because it's pretty high capacity, and its very slim for fitting into my jacket pocket. This battery can also charge my tablets too because it can output more power.

http://www.amazon.com/Opteka-BP-SC4...4918251&sr=8-1&keywords=solar+charger

Opteka BP-SC4000 Ultra Thin Solar Powered High Capacity (4000mAh) Backup Battery and Charger
This compact solar charging battery can be powered via a USB cord into a 12 volt adapter, or by direct sunlight which is much slower for recharging. I'm slowly but surely getting more into solar power, including adding solar panels to my van's roof to top off the auxillary battery. I also have 2 other portable solar chargers by Orange Joos, and SolarMonkey, but those other 2 batteries are noticeably larger.

Yeah, rather sick huh? I enjoy my personal electronics dating back to the days of the orginal Sony Walkman cassette player! Now that's dating myself, haha! That's why I'm not intimidated by this stuff, it's actually quite enjoyable and relaxing to have stuff at my disposal for media consumption. That's why when my first (underpowered) auxillary battery pooped out on me due to excessive overload, I realized I needed an alternative solution which is 12 volt/USB power versus inverter power.

By the way, you should have seen my photography gear collection back in the day when this used to be my preoccupation. My camera gear back then would easily dwarf all my current electronics. I'm glad I got over that particular sickness!

How will switching to dc/USB only help with killing the battery?
It seems you may be pulling more juice than is going back into the battery

Switching to portable 12 volt/USB electronics lightens the load on the auxillary battery. For example, instead of turning on my auxillary battery and inverter to power both a Toshiba 19" flat screen TV and a separate Sony Blueray DVD player, I can now simply watch videos using a 12 volt powered Sony 9" screen Blueray player. That alone is a big difference in power usage. Another example, instead of turning on the auxillary battery and inverter to recharge my Sony 14" Windows 7 laptop which normally requires plugging into a wall AC electrical outlet, I can now plug in my Lenova Tablet 2 Windows 8 10.1" touch-screen tablet into a 12 volt adapter, much like what I'm doing now for my smartphone and Android tablets. This is what I mean by using devices that are smaller and portable and require less power to operate. I have yet to kill my main battery (a Sears Diehard) under the hood by plugging in 12 volt/USB powered electronics.

Hello Adrian, thanks for the comment! Hope you're doing well ! -Casey

Update here. I received this Phillips TV and DVD combination, and it's truly very nice! Picks up reception very well with good clarity for television viewing. Plus the DVD player works well too, just no Blueray. This device is worth the extra cost. I highly recommend it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037KLRC0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc
Philips PET749/37 7- Inch Portable Digital LCD DTV and DVD Player with 180- Degrees swivel screen

What a haven for theft your van is, yikes. Can't you just watch videos on your laptop and eliminate a few items? I'm just going to put an old 17" laptop in mine and a 3 TB drive with thousands of movies and TV shows on it. Actually, I'll just get two 1.5 TB portable drives and put 1 for TV and 1 for movies as I don't want to risk getting my 3 TB drives stolen, considering how long it took me to fill up 20+ TB's of stuff. Then when I leave the van, I take the 2 portable drives with me. If they steal the laptop, it's worth less than $150 right now.

I don't even want to mess with DVD's nor Bluerays. That stuff wastes space and doesn't like the heat in the summer. Most movies can be downloaded in a matter of weeks after they've been released on DVD.

You can watch TV with a USB adapter and a good antenna.
