Cold Brew Coffee

My son likes it. He buys it at Costco. It's concentrated, so you just add water-or like my son does, he just adds milk-lots of it. Cold brew cafe con leche. Kinda expensive. It tastes okay to me. But, unless you drink it room temperature, you still have to heat it and the water up.

Give me my Keurig, drip or French press. Boiling water takes very little propane, even if you use the one pound cylinders. I don't know which would cost more-the cost of the cold brew coffee or the cost of propane to boil water. Between the extra expense of the cold brew coffee and then the propane to heat it, you might as well make traditional coffee.

But, you might really like it. And you wouldn't have to deal with coffee grounds. Try it and report back.

My wife buys it at costco. She has also made it at home but it takes all day to "brew".

She likes it, I prefer the Keurig.

I've tried cold brew. Wasn't the full body taste I prefer. I grind organic whole bean grown in Mexico. I wasn't a coffee snob until this coffee. :)

P.S. The cold brew I tried was not sweet.

I've both bought it and made it. Stok brand is delicious, very mellow and rich without that acid bitter edge, but it's expensive as are all of them AFAIK. Making it is surprisingly messy, at least the way I tried. Mix 3 cups of coarse ground coffee into 6 cups of water, let steep for 8-12 hours, stirring periodically. Strain. Filter. Use as concentrate mixing in 1:4-6 ratio with water. Did I mention that the homemade is also expensive? Still, very tasty. But, OMG the clean up. That much wet coffee grounds manage to get onto and stick to everything.

If anyone has used an easier, less messy way, please let me know.

those little folgers or starbucks single packets cold brew. I just put them in a bottle and shake it. but like post 2 said if you want hot coffee you still have to burn fuel.

Go to thrift, second hand store, buy old pantyhose, add coarse ground coffee, agitate every now and again, 12-24 hours later walah! Cold brew.
Both Mrs. b and I enjoy it, but I still think bulletproof is the best coffee.

I was searching for an easy clean up coffee method.  I used full sized (12 cup) coffee filters with enough coffee to make 4 cups to make coffee bags.  I twisted them closed and tied them up with dental floss.  They get the shape of a squat Hershey kiss.  Then overnight in a 24 oz spaghetti sauce jar full of water completed the cold brew.  I tried varying the quantities of coffee and water.  I never got a taste I liked but the cleanup is easy.

Maybe its just me, but i think i would spring the extra buck and buy NEW pantyhose.

:p

I like it but it takes 3-4x the grounds to make it cold. My frugal side can't take that.

So in the summer I make coffee in advance, let it cool, and refrigerate it overnight.

Baw haw haw. Good one +++
Ah but properly sourced old pantyhose might add  jenesaisquoi.

A French Press might be able to do double duty as a hot or cold brewer
=Cosmo.

I use to cold brew but had trouble keeping up with my consumption, I didn't use anymore grounds than to make drip coffee but I did let it steep 24-48hrs even with a gallon brewing at a time I always seemed to run out and have to wait for the next batch to finish steeping. The pros for me was the low acidity. I think cold brew does taste better than drip or perc coffee when mixed to make Irish or English coffee but otherwise I have come to prefer peculated coffee over even pressed.

And yes French presses work good for cold brew, I used a larger one for a while but again couldn't keep up with my needs just doing cold brew.

It's a thought since I enjoy iced coffee anyway :)

As for coffee grounds, they are wonderful for earth worms. I save mine up when using the purple k cup and dump them into the small digs the dog makes in the yard looking for grubs. :D

Now once I'm on the road.... I'll probably put them at a tree base?

(While I'm thinking... if you have a wood fire and are near a palm tree... spread ash at base...they usually need it (especially if Palms are turning yellow).

So, this post reminded me how much I like cold brew. Ordered this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IJ3O0Y2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 since it's a reasonable price and looks like it would keep the mess down. I'll let you all know how it works out.

So I got the little brewer. Very easy. Put 50 gms coffee in the basket, fill pitcher with water, stir a few times, sit over night. It made several mugs of good strong coffee (I wound up diluting it 1:1 with water) that was just fine. Could probably use a somewhat finer grind than regular coarse. Clean up was very simple - just tap mesh section into trash and rinse all. Well worth the price.

Added: Directions were in Japanese, but with pictures and the 50 gms measurement.

used pantyhose? now theres an idea. 1 question: how used? does real used give it "special" flavor?
