Q- Brochen ?

-----------------

I agree- and one of the great ones can be found at the Cafe Texan. CFS & cream gravy with Texas fries and pie.  I worked my way through school there - at the counter for tips that jingled...

Had to look up Brochen - no. The european bread I liked had dark grain, hard crust and dense moist interior, and would stay fresh for days, due to the crust. I would carry around a loaf in my day pack. Safeway Renaissance Grain bread is much like that. Unsliced, so you tear it, best of all possible bread worlds.

Now, if "chicken fried steak" is beef that's been battered and fried like chicken, then why isn't "chicken fried chicken" just "fried chicken?"

I've never had chicken fried chicken so can't tell you. Chicken is next to last (turkey) on meat that I like to eat. I will get fried chicken occasionally (Popeye's non spicy).

Inquiring minds want to know. Learn something new every day. Mr N is the Inquirer in Chief.

Looking it up, steaks are cut "across" the muscle fibers, whereas filets are cut "parallel to" the spine. One might think a chicken is too small to do a steak on. They must have really big chickens in Texas.

"steak (/ˈsteɪk/) is a meat generally sliced across the muscle fibers, potentially including a bone".

"Fish fillets are generally obtained by slicing parallel to the spine, rather than perpendicular to the spine. Cuts of fish performed perpendicular to the spine are known as steaks or cutlets, and often include bone".

I got hooked on Popeye's Red Beans and Rice while over in Ramstein. Another mainly southern dish, I think.

Please bring five loaves for the fish fry at RTR...

I will make a Key Lime Pie!

I know Ramstein- I attended school in Kaiserslautern.

Cafe Texas must be in Huntsville. Cool looking "authentic" place. Now we know why you know so much about ghost towns on Texas. Do they have Honky-Tonky in Huntsville, or do to have to cross statelines over to Loiusiana?

FYI: there is a Safeway right across the street from the Walmart in Parker AZ ... the 2 closest big grocery stores to Quartzsite which has rinky-dink. Oh, Blythe does have an Albertsons.

I did live in Heidelberg for a year.  (oops, I should not have mentioned Ramstein).

I'm sure there must have been Honky Tonks, there. I worked at the Cafe Texan when I was in school. I absolutely loved it!  The diner; not so much school.  ;)

Safeway artisan breads are pretty darn good.

Safeway and Albertsons merged a couple of years ago so should carry pretty much the same stuff.

RVers take note - looks like plenty of parking around Cafe Texan for RVs. Authentic chicken fried steaks inside; cut against the muscle grain, rather than parallel to it.

Darn, I have a sweet tooth right now. Craving cake or pie. Darn should have picked something up in town. Now it is dig through the cupboard time. Score-- Peanut butter cookies in the freezer.

When I worked there, my regular customers were a bunch of old retired Texas Rangers. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed listening to their stories. I'd literally cut a class to work a lunch shift. It wasn't until I was well-married and my husband and I stopped by after a trip to Houston that I learned those Rangers were actually retired prison guards. My husband had a great laugh at that and so did the owners who finally told me after years and years. You know, I couldn't have cared less. Those 'Ranger's' company and their stories are some of my most treasured memories. I loved them and the Cafe Texan!

Liv, your stories of Huntsville and Texas Rangers reminded me of Hell or High Water, the movie. Excellent story. I think they robbed the Bank of Huntsville.

Yeah, they were charging $6.50 for a 1-pound green propane bottle.

Ohhh, we should warn Liv about the guy in the bookstore on the east end of town before she walks in there totally unawares!!! ROTF...LOL. (BTW, he had a book about Mick Fleetwood on the counter, and I swear they must be brothers. I kept calling him Mick after that, it was a riot, I think I embarassed him, Ha,ha,ha. :).

actually the Road Runner has pretty good meat and if you factor in driving somewhere else the prices aren't bad. but I wouldn't want to do my weekly shopping there. they changed owners this year so we will see how they are. highdesertranger
