Maybe it is time to accept reality: free dispersed camping on public lands is a thing of the past, and the best you can hope for is low-price camping that has good location and lots of space.
Bob Wells is saying the opposite, it's just that some popular places near certain cities have been overrun, and to avoid them. There are 188-million acres of Natl Forest and 250-million acres of BLM land, so don't write it off just yet. There is plenty to go around if you look.

If caravans of 75 people found cooperative county fairgrounds in non-chic areas of the western states, there would be several advantages to the campers AND the towns in question:
1. Restrooms at the county fairgrounds would make it easier for newbies who aren't really self-contained yet.
2. Economic benefits for the small, dying towns.
3. A growing appreciation for the un-touristy locations that still have great scenery, and a lower cost of living.
4. Possible employment at those fairgrounds as a host or caretaker.
5. A positive step towards a practical future, instead of Denialism, and clinging to the past and a dying romance of camping for free on public lands.

This is an awfully jaded viewpoint about life. There was another guy who came on and posted 27 threads in 2-months, all basically on the theme that the sky is falling. I guess people were supposed to pull their hair and beat their heads with hammers about the coming end of the world.

It's total silliness if you look at the actual numbers. As I mentioned, 188-million acres of Natl Forest and 250-million acres of BLM land. It's not gonna to be closed off because 75 people may be traveling around in a group. The other stats are that 40,000,000 (40-million) people go camping every year in the US and there are 7-8,000,000 RVs. So the whole thing in regards this forum/website is insignificant in comparison.

The other thing is, the caravans haven't even started, and they are meant to mentor new people in any case. People will come and go, and my guess is big groups will never stay together for very long. The dynamics of human nature will override.

I think the whole idea sounds like it will be a blast. It’s not like it’s the first time caravans have happened and the sky didn’t fall.

I wish I could have joined the airstream caravans as they traveled around the world.

And don’t forget the really old caravans.... covered wagons

Ha, I see that Spaceman Spiff has been on this forum since 2014 .... 4+ YEARS !!!!

That's like forever. You got seniority. Offhand, has what you've been seeing out there changed very much in that time?

I have been a full-timer since July but have stuck pretty close to home in Wisconsin. I wonder if there is any way for me to meet up with someone on the way to RTR. I would like to leave here mid October and stop in Pahrump on the way to the RTR. Anyone have any desire to let me tag along even if just for a short time?

Thanks!
Linda Winter (who doesn't like winter!)

I have a house in Pahrump on a couple of acres. I have hosted guests from Couchsurfers and Boondoxkers welcome. You are welcome to stay here a few days to rest.

Since I was a wee lad and saw my Grandpa's harvesting caravans, and later when I was a trucker, watching What's Eating Gilbert Grape, the RV caravan that showed up in that movie piqued my interest again. Of course, at the time, I was 'living it', so to speak... just in the cab/sleeper of an 18-wheeler. :)

I hope to join one of these in the not-too-distant future.

I'll be transitioning from the fall color in Telluride, SW Colorado, to Sedona October 6-20th via Escalante and Page. I won't be going to Moab, but from there would be an easy join up, heading West on US 95 from Blanding. This is a route I know fairly well - and still lots of room for exploration. You can get into the lower end of the Canyonland Maze from here, but it would be safest to have a few vehicles when exploring that area.

Hi Bob,
We are heading toward the RTR but coming into the general vicinity of AZ/NV/NM by early November. Any caravans planned for November?  I scanned all replies to this post and didn't see anything...
We have only been full-timing for the past 3 months and are really looking forward to finding like-minded folks to meet up with every once in awhile...figure the caravan might be a great way, plus of course the RTR!

Thanks,

Excellent. It's shaping up: groups, schedules, locations, maps.

Hi Running late. poor internet skills. it gives me lots of stress. and takes me days to do simple things. Trying to get ready for caarvan. don't know how to use, form, bogs, face book etc. overwhelmed, and stressed.

Here's a map for reference. For reference, it's about a 200 mile drive between Anza-Borrego to Bouse and about 125 miles between Parker and Yuma/American Girl Mine.  (By the way, the Parker and Yuma/American Girl Mine sites are actually in California.)
